THE FIRST 100 YEARS
OF
SACRAMENTO LODGE No.40
JACOB KOHLMAN
Jacob Kohlman,
an original petitioner of Sacramento Lodge, was born in Bavaria, Germany in
1827. He and his brother Solomon came to California, during the Gold Rush and
established a clothing and dry-goods business under the name of Kohlman and Brother at 127 J Street and later at 150 J
Street in Sacramento. The records of Tehama Lodge No. 3, Sacramento indicate
that he was made a Mason in that Lodge during the year 1850; the dates of
reception of the degrees are not of record. He served as Treasurer of Tehama
Lodge No. 3 on Sept. 19, 1853 and on Dec. 13, 1853 was appointed Treasurer of
Sacramento Lodge U. D. and served in that capacity until May 26, 1854 when he
was installed the first Junior Warden of Sacramento Lodge No. 40. Although the
roll-call book of Sacramento Lodge 40 indicates that he dimitted
therefrom May 18, 1857, the fact remains that there
is no record of his ever receiving an official dimit
at any regular meeting of the Lodge. He must have been received however as
subsequently he affiliated with Nevada Lodge No. 13. The Directory for Nevada
(now Nevada City) for the year 1856 shows J. Kohlman
as a clothier associated with his brother Solomon in a wholesale and retail
clothing business known as the "Emporium of Fashion." The
establishment was located at the corner of Main and Commercial Streets, Nevada.
This Directory also shows Jacob Kohlman as being
Secretary of the Nevada Hebrew Society, organized April 5, 1855 and ultimately
merged into North Star Lodge No. 120 Ancient Jewish Order Kesher
Shel Barsel. In 1857 he was
a member of the Board of Trustees of Nevada. The Grand Lodge returns for May
1859 and 1860 list Jacob as a member of Nevada Lodge No. 13, Nevada (City),
California. The May 1861 returns show him and his brother Solomon as
withdrawing from Nevada Lodge No. 13; Solomon moved to San Francisco and
affiliated with Pacific Lodge No. 136 in 1864 and in 1875 became its Worshipful
Master. No further information has been found concerning Jacob Kohlman.
