WALTER J. ZIEGLER

 

 

            Walter J. Ziegler, an outstanding member of the teaching profession for many years in California, has since 1956 been Superintendent of the San Gabriel School District.

            A native of St. Louis, Missouri, Mr. Ziegler was born on June 19, 1918, to Walter J. and Anabel B. Ziegler.  He came to California in 1921.  Mr. Ziegler attended Fullerton Junior College where he received his A. A. degree in 1939.  From Fullerton he went to Santa Barbara State College, where he received the A. B. degree; Santa Barbara College, University of California, where he obtained his elementary school administrative training; and the University of Southern California, where he received his Master of Science in Education degree and his training in the administration of higher education in 1953.  Mr. Ziegler is now working on his Doctorate degree in Education, under the S. D. Shankland Memorial Scholarship for Graduate Study in Education and Administration.

            In 1941 Mr. Ziegler was a classroom teacher at Avenal Elementary School, where he became teaching vice principal in 1943 and principal in 1944.  In 1945 he was principal of the Fullerton Elementary School, and in October of that year he became Superintendent of the Reef-Sunset Union Elementary School District in Avenal (Kings County) California.  He held this post until June, 1956.

            Mr. Ziegler has had the honor of being included in the Who’s Who in American Education.  He is a member of the Blue Key, a men’s honorary organization; Alpha Delta Chi, an honorary society in elementary education; and Phi Delta Kappa, men’s honorary education group.  Other than professional affiliations, he is past president of the Avenal Rotary Club and past secretary, director and program chairman; a member and director of the San Gabriel Rotary Club for five years; a former director of the Avenal and San Gabriel Chamber of Commerce for eight years, serving as director for seven of those years.  Mr. Ziegler has an honorary life membership in the PTA, and has served on the district and local advisory boards.  Since 1957 he has been an honorary member of the San Gabriel Kiwanis International; and has served as schools division chairman of the Community Chest; coordinating council president in 1960-1961; school division chairman for the San Gabriel Red Cross; Alhambra District YMCA board of directors, where he also served as Chairman; a past council member of the Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts of America; on the Council of the Alhambra Area Interfaith Council; a Scottish Rite Mason for seven years; and a member of the First Methodist Church.

            When Mr. Ziegler takes time off from his many activities, he enjoys reading, hunting, fishing, tennis, golf and swimming.

            Mr. Ziegler married Barbara Louise Boehm in Montecito, California, on August 9, 1941.  They have three daughters:  Virginia, Jane and Mary Ellen.  With three girls, Mrs. Ziegler is very active in the Girl Scouts.  The Ziegler’s live at 132 South San Marino in San Gabriel.  The School Superintendent’s office is located at 102 East Broadway in San Gabriel.
