JOHN MARVIN
YORK
Judge John M. York, of the California District Court of Appeal, Los Angeles, has achieved success, both as a lawyer and jurist, and has amply earned the confidence and esteem of his colleagues throughout the state.
He was born in 1878 at Berkeley, but moved with his parents to Pasadena while still quite young. He completed his preparatory educational training in public schools and Throop Institute of that city. His legal training was obtained through private study, and he was admitted to the California bar in 1899.
For a period of 14 years Judge York engaged in general civil practice alone in Los Angeles, specializing in the trial of civil litigation and successfully conducting many important cases before the various courts. In 1913 he was elected Judge of the Superior Court of Los Angeles County. It was in 1926 that he assumed his present position on the bench of the California District Court of Appeal.
Judge York has also been quite active in Republican politics, and was one of the leaders in the Lincoln-Roosevelt League of Los Angeles. He holds membership in the State Bar of California and Los Angeles County Bar Association, as well as the Los Angeles Yacht Club, California Yacht Club, Native Sons of the Golden West, Elks and Masonic bodies, including the Shrine, and Knights of Pythias. In 1906 he married Louise Baskford and they have one son, John Marvin, Jr.
