Biographies
LEO B. WAYLAND
Mr.
Leo B. Wayland, one of the highly regarded citizens of this community, has been
interested in California civic affairs for over fifty years and specifically in
the City of Alhambra for the past twenty years.
Mr. Wayland is a practicing attorney and has been actively engaged in
the legal profession for the past thirty-six years and now specializes in
probate and corporation law.
Civic
minded he has always given of his time and effort to the needs of the community
to help in the progress of Alhambra.
Mr.
Wayland was born on October 7, 1888, in Sacramento, California, to Thomas and
Lillie Mae (Ault) Wayland.
After
completing his elementary education in San Francisco, Mr. Wayland graduated
from the University of Southern California College of
Law in 1925. He was in the employ of the
Wells Fargo and Company Express from 1915- 1926, and continued on when the
company merged into the American Railway Express, up to the time of his
entering into practice of law in 1926.
Mr.
Wayland maintained offices in Los Angeles from 1926 – 1946, and moved to
offices in El Sereno where he continued in association with Mr. Everett R. Peckham until 1951 when he moved to Alhambra and established
his office at the present location, Granada Professional Building, 924 East
Main Street.
In
1943 Mr. Wayland was appointed Chief of Staff of the Alhambra Civil Defense
Corps, and in 1950 he was appointed Director of the Alhambra Civil Defense and
Disaster Organization. Mr. Wayland is
actively engaged in defense and protective measures and presently is chairman
of the legislative committee of the Southern California Civil Defense and
Disaster Association, and is a member of the military manpower committee of the
Sixth United States Army Recruiting District.
He is currently vice-president of the Southern California Civil Defense
and Disaster Association.
He
is vice-president of the board of trustees of the Alhambra Community Hospital
and fourth vice-president of the American National Red Cross, Alhambra Chapter.
Mr.
Wayland married Miss Sybil I. Carpenter in the Pasadena Presbyterian Church on
November 13, 1936. Mrs. Wayland serves
as secretary and adjutant of the Alhambra Defense Corps and as secretary and
director of the board of directors, American National Red Cross, Alhambra
Chapter.
For
forty-one years Mr. Wayland has been a member of Sunset Masonic Lodge, No. 352
of Los Angeles, and is a member of the Alhambra High Twelve Club. His is past president of San Gabriel Arch
Angel Parlor, Native Sons of the Golden West.
