TAD UYENO

Part of the Japanese heritage is a wonderful talent for horticulture, both in the raising of plants and in their artistic arrangement.  Though his company does no landscaping, Tad Uyeno has combined his innate talent with a fine business sense as the owner of the oldest wholesale nursery in Rosemead, Uyeno Nursery Company, established in 1948 at 8719 East Mission Road, handling general nursery stock in a wholesale capacity only.  Mr. Uyeno, a native of California, had started in the nursery business in 1937, but during the war had to leave the state, resuming his business in 1947, first in San Gabriel, then at his present location.

The son of Charles K. and Miyo (Matsumoto) Uyeno, both of Wakayama, Japan, Tad Uyeno was born on November 15, 1914, in Winters, California, where he later attended elementary and high schools.  During wartime Mr. Uyeno attended night school in Chicago, the Freight Traffic Institute, until 1945, and was given qualification in 1946 to practice before the Interstate Commerce Commission.

Tad Uyeno’s wholesale nursery business in Rosemead supplies retailers from Los Angeles to San Francisco with ornamental nursery stock; a large portion of his business is with local retailers.  Employing about ten people, Mr. Uyeno works five acres locally and six in another area, with about eight acres under cultivation at the present time.  Licensed by Public Utilities Commission as a highway carrier, Mr. Uyeno’s company does his own and other hauling.

A member of the California Association of Nurserymen, Mr. Uyeno was one of its directors in the 1950’s.  He is a member of the Rosemead Chamber of Commerce.

Married in Vacaville, California, on March 14, 1937, Mr. Uyeno and his wife, the former Chiyoko Sakauye of El Centro, recently celebrated their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary.  They are the parents of one daughter, Sayoko Uyeno, who attended Muscatel School, was active at Rosemead High School, and is in her final year at the University of Southern California.  In 1958 Sayoko Uyeno received the Rosemead Rotary Club’s “Service Above Self” Award.

Mr. Uyeno has written articles on gardening and contributed articles on general topics to newspapers.  He read extensively and makes a hobby of photography.
