PAUL J. TURNER

Eleven years ago Paul J. Turner became the owner of Turner’s Pet and Garden Supply, the only store of its type in Monterey Park.  The business had been started at 521 North Garfield in 1951, and in 1957 was moved to its present location at 157 West Garvey.  A variety pet shop rather than a specialty shop, Turner’s handles birds, small animals, and tropical fish, with special emphasis on pet foods and remedies.  Mr. Turner also features free delivery within the area, and has a boarding service for birds.  Turner’s also carries a full line of garden supplies.

Mr. Turner has been very active in the Monterey Park Kiwanis Club, serving as its third vice president.  Thanks to the work of his predecessors, Mr. Turner had a solid foundation to build on, and consolidated the club, getting it to run smoothly.  He is presently on the board of directors of Kiwanis.  He has been active in other community undertakings, especially Red Cross, and has been a local Republican campaign worker.  He was also chairman of the Cub Scout pack committee, from 1946 to 1951.

Born in New Castle, Pennsylvania, on March 6, 1906, Paul J. Turner is the son of the late H. Clyde Turner, of Pulaski, Pennsylvania, and Elizabeth (Ulrich) Turner, of Sharon, Pennsylvania, who lives in Alhambra.  Mr. Turner’s paternal ancestors have been traced back beyond the Revolutionary War.  Receiving his early education in New Castle, Mr. Turner graduated from high school there in 1924, and attended the University of Pittsburgh for two years.

Before coming to California in 1939, Mr. Turner worked in chemical laboratories, continuing that work in this state through 1945.  For the next six years was a salesman for a furniture firm, settling down to his present business in 1951.

Mr. Turner was married to the former Miss Hazel Gladys Holt, of Altoona, Pennsylvania, on June 6, 1936, in Pitcairn, Pennsylvania.  Mrs. Turner is a member of the Christian Science Church.

At home the Turner’s have tropical fish and a cat, the only pets that can be successfully left alone during the day while both Mr. and Mrs. Turner are working.  In the past they have always had a dog, but dogs need companionship.  Mr. Turner also makes hobbies of photography and gardening.
