LEOPOLD (BOLESLOWOWICA STANISLAW ANTONI)
STOKOWSKI
Leopold (Boleslawowicz Stanislaw Antoni) Stokowski, orchestra conductor, was born in London, England, in April of 1887; son of Boleslaw Kopernicus Stokowski. He has been an American citizen since 1915.
Graduate of Queens' College, Oxford, England, and also studied in France, Germany, and at Royal College, London, England.
Mr. Stokowski was conductor of the Cincinnati Orchestra, 1909 to 1912; Philadelphia Orchestra, 1914 to 1936; and conducted the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, and San Francisco Orchestra; conductor of All-American Orchestra which was on tour in South American during the summer of 1940, and then on a second tour in the United States and Canada during the spring and summer of 1941. Conducted NBC Symphony Orchestra, New York, 1941 to 1944; founder and conductor of New York City Symphony from March 1944 to April 1945. He became conductor of the Hollywood Bowl Symphony in 1945; and was also conductor of New York Philharmonic.
Mr. Stokowski has appeared in motion pictures: “Great Broadcast of 1937”; “100 Men and a Girl”; “Fantasia”; and “Carnegie Hall.” He has had symphonic transcriptions of Bach recorded by Victor and Columbia. He is also the author of “Music for All of Us,” 1943.
