JOHN
R. STANTON, JR.
A
native son of California and practically a native of Alhambra, John R. Stanton,
Jr., an attorney, established his present law office at 317 West Main Street in
1949, the same year in which he was admitted to the California State Bar.
The
son of John R. Stanton, Sr., a retired book publisher from Chicago, Illinois,
and Catherine Agnes Loy Stanton, the junior John R. Stanton was born in
Pasadena on August 27, 1922, and the family moved to Alhambra the same
year. Mr. Stanton, Sr., was an actor in
motion pictures for many years after retiring from the publishing business, and
was very active in Alhambra political affairs from 1922 to 1950. He was also a member of the Alhambra Library
Board. The senior Stanton’s are both
living in Alhambra in the same home they built in 1922. Another son, Thomas, is a real estate
developer and builder in the Whittier-Fullerton area.
John
R. Stanton, Jr., after receiving his elementary education at All Souls
Parochial School in Alhambra, attended Alhambra High School, graduating in
1940. He attended Pasadena Junior
College for two years, and in July, 1942, John R. Stanton, Jr., enlisted in the
United States Navy as an Aviation Cadet.
Upon completion of his training, he graduated as a Naval Aviator and in
November, 1943, was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States
Marine Corps Reserve, and subsequently attained the rank of Captain. Mr. Stanton served as a Marine fighter pilot
in both the Philippine and Okinawa campaigns and was decorated with the
Distinguished Flying Cross and with two Air Medals. In October, 1946, Mr. Stanton was released
from active duty but remained in the reserves until December, 1956, when he
received his honorable discharge.
In
1946 John R. Stanton Jr., resumed his education at the University of Southern
California, receiving his law degree in 1949.
While attending the University of Southern California, John R. Stanton,
Jr., enjoyed the high honor of being a member of the Southern California Law Review
Student Editorial Board for the years 1947-1948. In the year 1948, he was elected to the
office of Vice-President of the student body of the University of Southern
California Law School. While in law
school, Mr. Stanton was a member of the Delta Theta Phi legal fraternity.
In
June, 1949, Mr. Stanton, having passed the state bar examination, was licensed
as an attorney and counselor at law to practice in all courts of the State of
California. Mr. Stanton was then
admitted to practice before the Internal Revenue Service, and on March 22, 1954,
he was duly admitted and qualified as an Attorney of the United States District
Court for the Southern District of California.
Since the month of June, 1949, Mr. Stanton has been actively and
continuously engaged in the general practice of law, and during this period he
has maintained his offices in the city of Alhambra. In addition to the California State Bar
Association, Mr. Stanton is a member of the American Bar Association, the Los
Angeles County Bar Association and the San Gabriel Valley Bar Association and
Legion Lex.
Mr.
Stanton’s civic interests include membership in the Civitan Club of Alhambra of
which he is a past president, membership in the Young Men’s Christian
Association of Alhambra, and membership in the Alhambra Chamber of Commerce. In addition, for over ten years last past,
Mr. Stanton has been a member of the Alhambra California Lodge Number 1328 of
the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.
On
September 15, 1951, in the Church of the Good Shepherd in Beverly Hills, Mr.
Stanton married the former Miss Meredith Leeds, who prior to her marriage was
an actress in motion pictures. Mr. and
Mrs. Stanton are the proud parents of two sons and three daughters ranging in
age from nine years to two years. The
two eldest children, Kathleen Ann and Sharon Elizabeth, were both born on the
11th day of October, one year apart and within eight minutes of the
same time. They were followed by John
Richard Stanton, III, Patrick Michael and Colleen
Marie. The Stanton’s are members of Our
Lady of the Miraculous Medal Catholic Church in Montebello, and the three
eldest children attend the Marian School there.
As
well as finding relaxation in the many activities which he shares with his
family, Mr. Stanton enjoys sporting events and plays both golf and tennis.
