ADRIAN
O. SPOON
When
he was fifteen years old, in 1919, Adrian O. Spoon came to California with his
parents and two of his brothers, to visit a married sister, a San Gabriel
Valley resident; he has been living in southern California ever since,
twenty-eight of those years in Alhambra where he has had the Los Angeles Times
dealership since 1942.
Mr.
Spoon was born in Luray, Osborne County, Kansas, on May 7, 1904, the son of
John A. and Laura Jane (Smith) Spoon.
The senior Mr. Spoon was one of the first pioneers of Osborne
County. There were six children in the
family in addition to Adrian O. Spoon:
Cleo, now living in Temple City and retired after twenty years as the
Los Angeles Times dealer
there;
Mrs. Alfred (Carrie) Reidell, now living in Azusa;
Mrs. (Faye) Applegate, of Luray, Kansas; Floyd, of Salina, Kansas, who passed
away in 1951; Alvin, who is the Monterey Park Los Angeles Times dealer, and
Clifford, of Temple City, is employed by the Pacific Telephone Company.
A
graduate of Alhambra High School in 1923, Mr. Spoon then attended the
University of California at Los Angeles for two years.
In
1928 Mr. Spoon obtained the Los Angeles Times dealership in Los Angeles and
continued in that position until 1942 when he moved back to Alhambra and became
the Los Angeles Times dealer in that city.
Mr.
Spoon is a member of the First Christian Church of Alhambra. He is the past president, in 1959, of the
High Twelve Club, and a charter member of that organization. He has been a member of the Alhambra Exchange
Club for nine years and on its board of directors for three years.
In
1941 Mr. Spoon joined the Alhambra Masonic Lodge Number 322, and in 1942 became
a member of the San Gabriel Valley Chapter of the Royal Arch Masons. He is also affiliated with the Alhambra
Commandery of the Knights Templar of California, Al Malaikah Temple, and is a
charter member and on the board of directors of the Mystic Shrine Club. Since 1951 Mr. Spoon has been a member of the
Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Lodge Number 1328, in Alhambra.
Adrian
O. Spoon and the former Miss Beulah May Bryant were married at a private
gathering in Covina, California.
An
active bowling enthusiast and member of the Los Angeles Times Bowling League,
Mr. Spoon also enjoys photography and is a member of the Pasadena Stereo Club.
