ALFRED HOYUN SONG

 

 

            A dynamic young lawyer, with aggressive leadership towards good city government, is Alfred Hoyun Song, who is a member of and vice-mayor of the Monterey Park City Council.  He is a Democratic candidate for the 45th Assembly District of California for the 1962 election.

            Born on the island of Oahu, Hawaii Territory, on February 16, 1919, Al Song, as he is known locally, is the son of Chin Koo Song and Chung Youn Kim.  Mr. Song’s father immigrated to Hawaii from Korea at the age of five.  His mother is also Korean.

            Receiving his early schooling in Hawaii, Mr. Song is a graduate of McKinley High School in Honolulu, Hawaii, in 1936, and attended the University of Hawaii.  Coming to California in August, 1940, at the age of 21, this civic minded young man attended and graduated from the University of Southern California in 1942, receiving degrees of B.S., L.L.B., and L.L.M.  He is also a graduate of the University of Nebraska.

            Admitted to practice law in California on January 5, 1950, Mr. Song has a very active private practice and general practice.  With his offices formerly located in downtown Los Angeles, Mr. Song opened his new office location at 214 South Garfield Avenue, in Monterey Park on May 1, 1961.  Emphasis of his practice is on trial work, civil and criminal cases.

            Mr. Song married Florence Eva Kim on February 20, 1942, in Los Angeles, California.  Of this union Mr. and Mrs. Song have three daughters and a son:  Leslie Rose; Marsha Alane; Frances Jean and Mark Elliott.

            A resident of Monterey Park since 1957, Mr. Song has devoted much of his time to community activities and projects.  A lifetime member of the Methodist Church, he served as chairman of the Monterey Park Planning Commission in 1959-60; was the charter president of the Monterey Hills Citizens Committee, serving two terms from 1958 to 1960.  He is a member and past director of the Monterey Park Kiwanis Club, and was nominated “Most Valuable Citizen” in 1959.  He is a member of the Los Angeles, California, and American Bar Associations.  Mr. Song is the legal counselor for Mentally, Emotionally Retarded Children, Inc., and served as president of the Monterey Park Coordinating Council in 1960, for which he was nominated “Most Valuable Citizen” for the year 1960.  He has been the chairman of the 45th Assembly District Democratic Council since 1959.  Elected to membership on the Los Angeles County Democratic Central Committee in June, 1960, Mr. Song was the 1960 Kennedy-Johnson Campaign Coordinator for the 45th Assembly Democratic District.  He is also a member of the California Democratic Speakers Bureau.  Mr. Song was elected to the Monterey Park City Council in April, 1960, and was elected vice-mayor of the City of Monterey Park in April, 1961.

            Serving in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, Mr. Song was a classification officer.  Reading mystery novels, swimming and playing a round of golf are among Mr. Song’s hobbies.  He delights his friends when he vocalizes, singing enchanting Hawaiian melodies.
