MR. AND MRS.
GEORGE G. SLOAN
Their twenty-fifth wedding
anniversary trip to the Hawaiian Islands resulted in George and Nellie Sloan’s
addition of an Island Shop featuring Hawaiian handicrafts, luau foods, and
tropical specialties to their Garland Nursery at 428 South Garfield Avenue in
Monterey Park. The nursery, under the
management of Mr. and Mrs. Sloan, has been in operation since 1955; it handles
all plants in the regular nursery line and is most notable for the raising of
tropical plants. The Island Shop, opened
in 1961, also managed by Mrs. Sloan, handles giftware, foods, and party and
pool decorations; it is the only shop of its type in the Monterey Park
area. The entire business has been
growing constantly since its inception, a reflection of the growth of the
town. A machinist, Mr. Sloan is still
employed in the manufacture of missiles, while Mrs. Sloan handles their nursery
business.
George G. Sloan was born on January 16,
1913, in South Fork, Pennsylvania. His
father, William Patrick Sloan of New York City, was in coal mining; his mother,
Eva (Tunnelcliffe) Sloan, was a native of Elkeston, England.
George Sloan was educated in Richeyville and
Centerville, both in Pennsylvania.
Before coming to Monterey Park in 1944, Mr. Sloan worked in Pennsylvania
in electrical maintenance for coal mines; he spent two years, from 1942 to
1944, in Michigan.
Very active with Monterey Park Boy
Scouts for seven years, Mr. Sloan was scoutmaster and Explorer Scout adviser
with St. Steven’s Holy Name Society, Troop Number 303. He was also on the Monterey Park reserve
police force for three years, and was a precinct worker for the Democratic
Party.
In West Virginia on December 27,
1933, Mr. Sloan was married to the former Miss Nellie Evelyn Jones, born on
July 13, 1912, in Fredericktown, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Harry A. and Ola
Gertrude (Hormell) Jones. Mrs. Sloan received her high school and
elementary education in Centerville, Pennsylvania. Mr. and Mrs. Sloan are the parents of three children,
all graduates of St. Steven’s School in Monterey Park. Mrs. William C. (Evelyn Frances) Mackel, who graduated from San Gabriel Mission High School,
was employed by the FBI for three years, and lives in Alhambra with her
husband, a civil engineer, and their three young children, Paul, Kathy, and
Timothy. In 1954 Mrs. Mackel was Monterey Park’s Tournament of Roses queen,
riding on the city’s float in the Pasadena Parade. George W. Sloan is a graduate of Don Bosco High School and in the United States Air Force,
stationed at Travis Air Force Base.
James A. Sloan is now attending San Gabriel Mission High School where he
is the school’s official photographer, also doing the photography for the annual.
Mr. Sloan does woodworking and
enjoys travel. Mrs. Sloan is interested
in the history of the Pacific Islands and their cultures.
