HARLAN SHOEMAKER, M. D.
Dr. Harlan Shoemaker is an able
physician and surgeon of Los Angeles who has here engaged in practice during
the past twenty-one years and maintains offices in the Medical Building at 1930
Wilshire Boulevard. A native of Martelle, Iowa, the Doctor was born July 21, 1875, his
parents being Milton Shoemaker, a graduate of Rush Medical College, and Mary (Hoey) Shoemaker. He
was graduated from the Stanford University of Palo Alto, California, in 1899,
with the degree of Bachelor of Arts, and his professional training was received
at the University of Pennsylvania, which conferred upon him the degree of
Doctor of Medicine in 1902. He began
practice in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and later removed to Shelby, North
Carolina, there continuing in the work of his chosen profession until 1912,
when he came to Los Angeles, California, in which city he has been accorded an
extensive and gratifying practice throughout the intervening years to the
present time.
Dr. Shoemaker, after graduating from
the University of Pennsylvania, became a Fellow of the American College of
Surgeons and after locating in Los Angeles was elected a member of the board of
trustees of the Dr. Barlow Memorial Library Association. Through the influence of Dr. Shoemaker, the
ground at the corner of Westlake Avenue and Wilshire Boulevard was purchased
upon which the present twelve-story Medical Building was erected and which
represents over one and one-half million dollars, and is fully occupied by
professional men. The ground rental
supports the Barlow Medical Library, whose site is opposite the Medical
Building. This particular locality is
destined to become the medical center of Los Angeles.
Dr. Shoemaker stands high in
professional circles in Los Angeles and served from 1919 to 1930, inclusive, as
secretary of the Los Angeles County Medical Society. He is a Mason, holding membership in the Los
Angeles Commandery and Al Malaikah Temple.
His name is also on the rolls of the Los Angeles Club and the Riviera
Country Club. He is clinical professor
of surgery at the University of Southern California and is recognized as a
popular and public-spirited citizen of Los Angeles.
Dr. Shoemaker was married in 1908 in
New York City to Miss Grace Clyde Gilman of New York, and they have a daughter,
Rosemary, a graduate of Stanford University and a member of the June, 1933,
class at the University of Pennsylvania.
