DONALD G. SAVAGE
Well-known
in financial circles throughout southern California, Mr. Donald G. Savage is
also one of the most active civic leaders in the San Gabriel Valley.
He
was born in Butte, Montana, March 27, 1925, one of three sons of George H.
Savage, Jr., and Bessie (Elmberg) Savage, who are now
residing in Alhambra. The father of
Donald G. Savage, Mr. George H. Savage, Jr., worked as Master Mechanic for the
Fire Department of the City of Butte, Montana.
The grandfather, George H. Savage, Sr., built the first hearse in
Montana, which is still in good condition and now on display at Miles City,
Montana.
Mr.
Donald G. Savage had his fundamental schooling, that is in elementary and high
school, in Butte, Montana. He moved to
Los Angeles in 1943, and continued his studies at Los Angeles City College for
two years, took extension courses, and prepared himself for a banking career,
attending seminars on banking subjects at Stanford University. In 1945 he moved to Pueblo, Colorado, and
worked for six years, from 1945 to 1951, in the production, planning and
shipping department of Colorado Fuel and Iron Corporation. He returned to live in California in 1951,
and lived in Alhambra for a year. During
this time he worked for a stock brokerage house. From 1952 to July, 1959, he was associated
with the Union Bank System in Los Angeles.
In this period he lived in Pasadena and Duarte, and moved back to
Alhambra in 1955.
Mr.
Savage joined the City National Bank of Beverly Hills in 1959, and is Assistant
Vice-President of the real estate lending department. This banking firm of 12 branch banks has had
the greatest growth of any bank in the United States in a comparative period of
time. In connection with his banking
career, Mr. Savage is a member of the Southern California Mortgage Bankers
Association. He has given lectures in
banking at numerous high schools, and conducts night courses and college classes
on the subject of banking. Mr. Savage is
a licensed real estate broker in the state of California.
Mr.
Donald G. Savage married Mary G. Atencio, who is a
native of Colorado. Mrs. Savage is
active in Saint Stephens Women’s Council and in Republican affairs. They have four children. Donald Lee is 15 years old, and goes to Don Bosco Technical High School, South San Gabriel. Robert Gerald is 11 years old, Charles Edward
is 7, and Andrew George is 6 years old.
The three boys attend Saint Stephens School in Monterey Park. The Savage family are
members of Saint Stephens Catholic Church in Monterey Park. Mr. Savage is active in Cub Scout work, which
is sponsored by the church.
He
is past member of the Alhambra Elks B.P.O.E. No. 1328, and belongs to the
Alhambra Toastmasters No. 1109.
A
sincere Republican, Mr. Savage was elected to the Republican County Central
Committee of Los Angeles in 1960, and has been active in precinct work since
1952. He is past precinct area chairman
of the Republican Party, and a member of the Young Republican Club of Alhambra.
In
1961 Mr. Donald G. Savage was appointed to the Alhambra City Planning
Commission by Mayor Talmadge Burke.
Mr.
Savage likes sports, especially swimming, enjoys gardening, and has made
cabinet making an interesting and practical hobby.
