SANTA MONICA WRITERS CLUB
Founded on the 10th of
July, 1924, the Santa Monica Writers Club has enjoyed a steady growth during
the nine years of its existence. Mrs. Ireine Unger Cone has served as its president for the last
six years. The honor members are Elmira
T. Stephens, Elfie A. Mosse, Izola
Forrester Page, John Steven McGroarty, Geoffrey F.
Morgan, Earle I. Strickland and Cyrus C. Johnson.
Starting with twenty-two charter
members, the club now has one hundred names on its membership roll. Meetings are held every Thursday evening and
from fifty to sixty members attend. Many
prominent speakers have addressed the club, including James McManus, the Irish
poet; the late Lillian Bell, an American authoress of note; and the Rev. Father
Prince Beaude, poet laureate of the Academie Francaise, now deceased.
The object of this organization is
to aid its members in the successful production and publication of original
writings. Any individual interested in
any form of writing who submits to the club evidence of literary work is
eligible to membership therein.
Among the club members who have been
awarded prizes are Betty Gray Bowling, the winner of over one hundred prizes;
May A. Sorenson, whose book of poems, “Secrets” was awarded a prize; Sheila McCulla; Laura Burbridge, who
produced a book of plays; and P. Edwin Thomas, author of technical works, the
winner of a five thousand dollar prize from the McFadden Publishing Company. Among members of the Writers Club who have
published works of merit are: Ireine Unger Cone; Mrs. Laura K. McNary, author of
“California, Spanish and Indian Place Names;” Elizabeth Goggins,
“Billy Boy;” Lisbeth Lois Jackson, author of plays
and stories; Laura Burbridge, who writes plays and
stories; and Florence Magill Wallace, writer of pageants and plays.
