SANTA MONICA WRITERS CLUB

Founded on the 10th of July, 1924, the Santa Monica Writers Club has enjoyed a steady growth during the nine years of its existence.  Mrs. Ireine Unger Cone has served as its president for the last six years.  The honor members are Elmira T. Stephens, Elfie A. Mosse, Izola Forrester Page, John Steven McGroarty, Geoffrey F. Morgan, Earle I. Strickland and Cyrus C. Johnson.

Starting with twenty-two charter members, the club now has one hundred names on its membership roll.  Meetings are held every Thursday evening and from fifty to sixty members attend.  Many prominent speakers have addressed the club, including James McManus, the Irish poet; the late Lillian Bell, an American authoress of note; and the Rev.             The object of this organization is to aid its members in the successful production and publication of original writings.  Any individual interested in any form of writing who submits to the club evidence of literary work is eligible to membership therein.

Among the club members who have been awarded prizes are Betty Gray Bowling, the winner of over one hundred prizes; May A. Sorenson, whose book of poems, “Secrets” was awarded a prize; Sheila McCulla; Laura Burbridge, who produced a book of plays; and P.
