EMMETT
S. RICE
Emmett
S. Rice is the owner and operator of one of Alhambra’s most popular downtown
restaurants and has long been active in the community’s civic, welfare and
youth programs.
Mr.
Rice arrived in California in September, 1923, and has been associated with the
R & H Restaurant at 29 South Garfield Avenue for the past 21 years. It is a popular gathering place for many city
government officials and businessmen.
A
product of local education, Mr. Rice attended Alhambra High School, graduating
in 1938 and later enrolled at the University of Southern California. He served as president of the Alhambra High
School Alumni Association from 1950 to 1951 and is currently president of the
United Fund of Alhambra.
Mr.
Rice has long been associated with the growth and leadership here in Alhambra
and in 1956 served in the important post of president of the Alhambra Chamber
of Commerce. His varied activities also
include posts as director of the Red Cross, Boy Scout chairman, and advisor-director
of the First Western Bank and membership on Babe Ruth and Little League
baseball board of directors.
His
club and fraternal memberships include Alhambra Lodge No. 322, F. & A. M.,
the Alhambra Quarterback Club and the San Gabriel High School Booster Club.
Mr.
Rice is a native of Farmington, New Mexico, and was born on September 3, 1920
to Stewart P. and Grace (Harrington) Rice.
He married the former Doris Laybourne, a
native of Centralia, Illinois, on April 30, 1943 and they have three sons: John S., 17; Emmett Lee, age 16; and Barry
A., age 8.
During
World War II Mr. Rice was a sergeant with the Army’s 27th Infantry Division and
was awarded campaign ribbons and battle stars for his participation in the
bloody South Pacific Theater, including the Battle of Okinawa.
