Biographies
ALLEN RAY
Allen
Ray is President and General Manager of Ray Products, Inc., an Alhambra
plastics firm and is the 1961 President of the Alhambra Chamber of Commerce.
Mr.
Ray was born in Harrison, Idaho, on July 4, 1912, moving with his family to
Alhambra in 1921. He started his
business in this city on April 1, 1949, with just two employees.
Educated
locally, Mr. Ray attended Ramona Grammar School and Alhambra High School,
graduating in 1930. Following his
graduation he enrolled at the California Institute of Technology, majoring in
mechanical engineering. He was graduated
from this institution in 1935.
His
first job was with the Union Oil Company, where Mr. Ray was employed for five years. In 1940 Mr. Ray left his position at the oil
company to become an instructor at Cogswell College, where he taught for two
years. Prior to establishing his own
business, Mr. Ray was associated with Permanente Corporation, Western Plastic,
Inc., and a research and development company.
Allen
Ray married Miss Margaret Garoutte on August 28,
1935, in the Alhambra First Presbyterian Church. Mr. and Mrs. Ray were classmates at Alhambra
High School. They are the proud parents
of three sons, Charles Allen, a student at California Institute of Technology;
Robert Bruce, a senior at Temple City High School; and Darryl Albert, who
attends Longden Elementary School in Temple City.
Mr.
Ray has been an active member of the Alhambra Chamber of Commerce since 1954,
and has served on the board of directors of this organization. He is a former member of the Alhambra
Exchange Club and is an active member of the Alhambra District Y. M. C. A. In 1952 and 1954 Mr. Ray served on the board
of directors of the Cal Tech Alumni Association. He is a director for the Society of Plastic
Engineers and is an active member of the American Chemistry Society.
Youth
work is an important part of Mr. Ray’s activities. He has been a Cub Scoutmaster and active in
the United Fund of Alhambra.
For
a busy man Mr. Ray has a very interesting hobby of flying his Beechcraft
airplane which is housed at the El Monte Airport. Mrs. Ray and their sons are also flying
enthusiasts.
Mr.
Ray’s philosophy of life is to live life to the fullest and enjoy it.
