John Frederic Pettingall is highly qualified for his position as coordinator of the program for gifted children in San Gabriel schools and for his position as principal of both Jefferson and McKinley Schools in San Gabriel.  Himself a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Phi Kappa Phi, national honorary fraternities, Mr. Pettingall holds a Bachelor of Science degree and a Master of Science degree; also a Master of Education degree from the University of Southern California, and took one year of post graduate work at the University of Iowa and one semester at Claremont College.  He has had close to twenty years of experience as an educator, teaching elementary school in Burbank for three and one-half years, then acting as teacher-principal at Roosevelt School in San Gabriel for one year, and serving first as principal of McKinley School from 1947 through 1951, and as the first principal of Jefferson School from 1952 until 1961, at which time he became the principal of both schools.  They have a combined enrollment of about eleven hundred students.  As coordinator of the gifted child program he provides teachers with curriculum materials and guidance in extending the learning of gifted children beyond the normal level within the classroom.  Children who are above average in music and art attend special classes in these fields.

Born in Phoenix, Arizona, on June 25, 1917, Mr. Pettingall is the son of the late Charles Edward Pettingall, an engineer who was born in Portsmouth, Ohio, and the late Clara E.
