EDWIN WENDELL PAULEY

 

Edwin Wendell Pauley, oil corporation executive, was born January 7, 1903, in Indianapolis, Indiana; son of Elbert I. and Ellen (Van Petten) Pauley.

Student at Occidental College, 1919-28; received the B.S. degree from University of California in 1922 and the M.S. degree in 1923.

Mr. Pauley became engaged in the oil business in 1923. He has been president of The Petrol Corporation, Fortune Petroleum Corporation since 1933, and Seaboard Royalty Company since 1935. Organizer of People’s Bank, Lakewood City, California; director of Griffith & Legg Construction, partner of John S. Griffith, builders and developers, Lakewood City, California; in business under his own name in construction, oil, real estate, etc., Los Angeles, California.

Special representative of Governor of California on Natural Resource Committee, 1939, in Interstate Oil and Compact Commission, 1940; special representative of President Roosevelt as liaison officer with United States Government and British agencies to secure one hundred tankers, 1940-41, to formulate plans for coordinator of Petroleum Industry, 1941; special representative for Petroleum Coordinator for War in Europe on petroleum lend lease supplies for Russia and England, 1941, and also to make a report with British and industry in England on enemy petroleum supplies, 1941; special representative of President Truman on Reparations Commission, with rank of Ambassador, 1945-47; adviser to Secretary of State on reparations, March-September, 1947; special assistant to Secretary of Army, 1947-48.

Mr. Pauley is past secretary and treasurer of the Democratic Committee; Democratic National Committeeman as California Representative for independent oil men on Planning and Coordinating Committee, National Recovery Administration, 1933; representative of Governor of California on Pan-American Highway Conference, 1939.

President of Independent Petroleum Association, 1934-38; vice chairman of Community Chest Drive, Los Angeles, 1938; finance chairman of China Relief, Los Angeles, 1941; regent of University of California since 1939. Member of Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity; Big “C” Society (University of California); Masonic Order; and the following clubs; University, California Yacht, Trans-Pacific Yacht (vice commodore), Catalina Yacht. He was in the Winner Class A on Trans-Pacific Yacht Race, San Francisco-Honolulu, 1939.

Mr. Pauley married Barbara Jean McHenry October 23, 1937; children: Edwin Wendell, Jr, Susan Jean, Stephen McHenry and Robert Van Petten.
