JESSE ARTHUR ORWIG

Jesse Arthur Orwig has traced his ancestry back to 1744, when members of the Orwig family operated a fur trading post and founded the town of Orwigsburg, Pennsylvania.

The son of Frank William and Matilda Kate Orwig, Art Orwig was born in Columbus, Ohio, on March 3, 1893.  Coming to California in 1903, the Orwig family settled in Los Angeles, and at that time in history, there were only three families in California with the last name of Orwig.  Mr. Orwig attended the Washington Street Elementary School in Los Angeles through the eighth grade.

Following his graduation from grammar school in 1908, Mr. Orwig went to work at the age of 15 as a printer’s devil.  He remained in this line of work for two years and in 1910 went to work for his future brother-in-law as a plumber’s helper.  In 1915 Mr. Orwig went into the plumbing business for himself.  During World War II he worked for the United States Government on various government projects.  Moving his business, which was known as the Monterey Park Plumbing Company, Inc., to Monterey Park in 1946, the Orwig family became residents of this city three years later in 1949.

Mr. Orwig married Miss Harriette Dean on August 14, 1914, in Santa Ana, California.  They have three children:  Mrs. Kathryn Stoner, who resides in Downey, California; Mrs. Mary Jane Evinger, a resident of Walnut, California, and Jesse Arthur, Jr., a resident of El Monte, California.  Mr. and Mrs. Orwig are very proud of their five grandchildren:  William E., Jr., Maureen Jane and Judy Kay Stoner; Robert B., Jr., and Diana Jane Evinger.  They have one great-grandchild, Charles Burns Evinger.

Jesse Arthur Orwig, Jr., has been a partner in the Monterey Park Plumbing Co., Inc., business with his father since May 14, 1959.  Extremely proud of his son, Mr. Orwig, Sr. states that he has the finest son any man could possibly have.  During World War II, Mr. Orwig, Jr., served with the United States Navy.  Robert B. Evinger, son-in-law of Mr. Orwig, Sr., is also in the family business, which has a total of six employees.  The Monterey Park Plumbing Company, Inc. is licensed to do plumbing contracting and repairs in all neighboring cities.

Mr. Orwig is an active member of the Rotary Club of Monterey Park; the Nazarene Church of Monterey Park; and is a 16-year member of Masonic Lodge No. 394 in Los Angeles.  He has been an active member of the Moose Lodge, the Mantel Club and various organizations.

For his hobbies, Mr. Orwig enjoys bowling and traveling.  During his younger years he played many games of baseball.
