FRED BENSON ORTMAN
Fred Benson Ortman, president of Gladding, McBean & Company, was born in New Salem, Ohio, on January 5, 1888, son of Benson Clark and Mary Ellen (Hill) Orrtman.
Studied Ceramic Engineering at Ohio State University, receiving a B.S. degree in 1911.
From 1911 to 1918 Mr. Ortman was assistant general manager of the New York Architectural Terra Cotta Company, Long Island City; chief ceramic engineer for Northwestern Terra Cotta Company, Chicago, Illinois, from 1918 to 1921; vice president of Tropico Potteries, Inc., Los Angeles, California, from 1921 to 1923; vice president and general manager of Gladding McBean & Co., Los Angeles, 1923 to 1938, and president since 1938. He is past director of Merchants and Manufacturers Association of Los Angeles, and of National Association of Manufacturers; past president of California Manufacturers Association; director of Security-First National Bank of Los Angeles, and of Stanford Research Institute, Stanford, California.
Mr. Ortman is a Republican; belongs to the Methodist Church, and is a member of the following clubs: California, Los Angeles Country (Los Angeles); and Pacific-Union of San Francisco.
On August 5, 1933, Mr. Ortman married Josephine Quigg; children by previous marriage: Robert Ashbrook and Florence Marie. Their home is in Bel-Air, California, at 1560 Stone Canyon Road.
