GEORGE J. O’BRIEN

 

George J. O’Brien, vice president of Standard Oil Company of California, was born December 10, 1896, in San Diego, California; the son of George N. and Florence R. (McLaughlin) O’Brien.

Graduated from the University of California in 1920 with the degree of B.S. in Economics.

Joined United States Naval Reserve in 1918 and became an ensign. In 1930, commenced continuous employment with Standard Oil Co. of California, in the sales department, San Francisco, and functioned in several sales capacities at Oakland, Fresno, Los Angeles, Portland until 1927 when was assigned to the treasury department of the company in San Francisco. Became assistant treasurer in 1931, treasurer in 1940, assistant to the president, Los Angeles, in 1941, and vice president, Los Angeles, in 1943.

Mr. O’Brien is director of the California Bank, Los Angeles (elected in 1942), California Institute of Associates (Pasadena), Downtown Business Men’s Association, Los Angeles Area Building Funds, Inc., National Safety Council (Greater Los Angeles Chapter), Veterans Service Center, Hollywood Bowl Association, Los Rancheros Vistadores (Santa Barbara), and Big C Society of University of California; director, secretary and treasurer of Santa Anita Foundation; director and first vice president of All-Year Club of Southern California; director and vice president of American Library of Information; Greater Los Angeles Plans, Inc., and Los Angeles Community Welfare Federation; trustee of Southern California Symphony Association; chairman of Board of Trustees of Los Adobes de los Rancheros; counselor of University of California Alumni Association.

Member of Finance Committee of California Arboretum Foundation, Inc.; California Historical Society, San Francisco; Historical Society of Southern California; Southwest Museum, Los Angeles; Zeta Psi Fraternity, Iota Chapter; F.& A.M.; Wine & Food Society of Southern California; Los Caballeros, Los Angeles; Vaqueros del Desiertos, Palm Springs; Desert Caballeros, Wickenburg, Arizona; and the following clubs: Pacific-Union, Bohemian (San Francisco); Petroleum, California (past president), Los Angeles Country, Chaparral, Saddle & Sirloin, Los Caballeros (Los Angeles); Annandale Gold (Pasadena); Newport Harbor Yacht (Balboa, California); Flintridge Riding (Flintridge); Thunderbird Country (Palm Springs, California). His hobbies are horse and dog breeding; shooting; and golf.

Mr. O’Brien married Blanche Barton on August 30, 1924, in Santa Cruz, California. They have three sons: Robert Barton, born December 3, 1925, George James, Jr., born September 22, 1927, and Peter Graves, born August 28, 1930. Their home is in Pasadena, California, at 230 South Arroyo Boulevard.
