Jay Everett Norton was born in Imogene, Iowa, on November 27, 1910, one of ten children, all presently living, of David Alanzo Norton, a farmer now deceased, and Althea Omega Nims Norton, a former teacher.  Both of Mr. Norton’s parents’ people date back to the Pilgrims.  A brother, Lester Paul Norton, also a barber, has a shop in San Marino.

Young Jay Norton attended the country school in Honey Creek, Iowa, and graduated from Randolph High School, also in Iowa; he earned his track letter in high school for running the half mile and lettered in football.  He graduated from Moller Barber College in 1932, and that same year worked as a barber in Whittier and Pasadena.

Mr. Norton started his business in Alhambra in 1935, a family barber shop which now has four barbers and a beauty shop.  He is a member of Barbers’ Union Local 295; Mr. Norton was vice-president of the Master Barbers’ Association in 1944.

Interested in working with young people, Mr. Norton was in Cub Scout and Boy Scout work for many years, and was youth director at the Emmaus First Lutheran Church in Alhambra where he is a member.  He has also held office as chairman of trustees, chairman of the board of education, vice-chairman of the congregation, president of the congregation, and Elder.

Mr. Norton received the Certificate of Merit for Outstanding Citizenship from the Alhambra Civitan Club in 1960.  He has been a member of the Alhambra Kiwanis Club since 1945 and was on its board of directors for five years, also serving as advisor of Alhambra Key Club two years.  He is an active Republican precinct worker.  Chairman of the Valley Boulevard Associates of the Alhambra Chamber of Commerce in 1957 and 1960, and this is his fourth year as a member of the board of directors of the Alhambra Chamber of Commerce.

On January 1, 1935, Jay Everett Norton was married to the former Miss Edna M. Burtram in the Lutheran Church in Shenandoah, Iowa.  Mrs. Norton has been active in church work and the Red Cross.  The Norton’s are the parents of three children:  Kenneth J. Norton, a Lutheran parochial school teacher in Long Beach, a graduate of Alhambra High School, married, and the father of one son; Gary Paul Norton, a graduate of Alhambra High School, a track letterman, president of the Key Club, and a cheerleader in his senior year, who is now a junior at Concordia Teachers’ College in Nebraska; and Phyllis Marie, a junior at Alhambra High School.  She is a member of Pequentias Service Club and a member of the A Cappella Choir.

A real “do-it-yourself” man, Mr. Norton enjoys woodworking and did all the woodwork in his barber shop himself.  He also finds relaxation in golf.
