HAROLD ALEXANDER NORTHROP

Rising steadily in the insurance business from a modest beginning to the point where is now the co-owner of one of the largest insurance agencies in this area, Harold Alexander Northrop is a native Alhambran who has been continuously employed in Alhambra except during World War II.

The only child of Lewis E. Northrop of Kansas, a carpenter who passed away in 1934, and L. Estella Stegmeier Northrop, Harold A. Northrop was born on December 1, 1915, in the Alhambra Hospital.

One of the first students to attend the McKinley Elementary School in San Gabriel, Mr. Northrop graduated from Alhambra High School in 1932, and did one year of post graduate work there.

Immediately upon finishing his studies at Alhambra High School, Harold A. Northrop went to work for the J. C. Naylor Co., which had been established in 1924, and was originally a real estate firm, but which later entered the insurance field.  In 1946 when Mr. Northrop returned from his service with the United States Army, he went into partnership with J. C. Naylor, John C. Naylor, Jr., and Richard A. Naylor.  Still under the name of the J. C. Naylor Co., the firm is now owned by Mr. Northrop in partnership with Richard A. Naylor.  They do a large volume of business, employing a staff of twelve, and handling all types of insurance.  Located at 401 West Valley Boulevard, the J. C. Naylor Co. was originally across the street from that address.

Mr. Northrop served in the United States Army from February, 1943, until his honorable discharge in March, 1946.  Nineteen months of that time was spent in the Aleutian Islands.  He attained the rank of master sergeant; his last army duty as sergeant-major at Station Hospital Number 329, just off Attu.

Mr. Northrop is a former member and past president, in 1939, of the Alhambra 20-30 Club; he has been a member of the Alhambra Exchange Club since 1954 and is the secretary of that organization.  He is also a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Alhambra Lodge Number 1328.

On June 20, 1942, Harold A. Northrop was married to the former Miss Patricia Chapman, who was born in Seattle, Washington, but who has spent the greater part of her life in Monterey Park.  They were married in the Turner and Stevens Wedding Chapel in Alhambra.  The Northrop’s are the parents of one son, Fred, and Mrs. Northrop is active in the Parent-Teachers’ Association of El Repetto Elementary School in Monterey Park, serving as secretary.

Mr. Northrop’s hobby is coin collecting.
