GURNEY E. NEWLIN

 

 

     Gurney E. Newlin, was born in Lawrence, Kansas, on November 11, 1880; the son of Thomas Elwood and Laurie (Hadley).

     He was a student at Haverford College, Pennsylvania, 1898-1900; graduated from the University of California in 1902 with the B.L degree; studied law at Harvard University, receiving his LL.B. degree in 1905; admitted to the California bar in 1904.  He received the LL.D. degree from the University of Southern California in 1930.

     Mr. Newlin began practice of the law in Los Angeles, California, in 1905; member of the firm of Newlin and Ashburn, 1918 to 1945, when Mr.  Ashburn was appointed to the bench.  He is now senior member of the firm of Newlin, Holley, Tackabury and Johnston, Los Angeles, California.

     Mr. Newlin is director of The Security First National Bank of Los Angeles, and Union Oil Company of California; member of the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws, 1914-31; chairman of Los Angeles Chapter of the American National Red Cross, 1917-18 and 1940-45, and member of Central Committee of same, 1940-46; member of the State Council section of Council of National Defense, 1917-18; federal wage examiner for Southern California for United States Shipping Board, 1918; Deputy Commissioner for the American Red Cross to France, 1918-19; president of the Los Angeles Grand Opera Association, 1926-29, and is vice president and director of the Southern California Symphony Association.

     Member of the American Bar Association (member of Executive Committee, 1923-26; president 1928-1929); Kansas State Bar Association (honorary); Iowa State Bar Association (honorary); Harvard Law School Association of New York (honorary); West Virginia Bar Association (honorary); Canadian Bar Association (honorary); Bar Association of the City of New York (honorary); California State Bar Association; Delta Kappa Epsilon (honorary president, 1032); Order of the Coif (honorary), Golden Bear (honorary); and member of the following clubs:  California, Los Angeles Country (Los Angeles); Pacific Union (San Francisco); The Links (New York).

     Mr. Newlin was decorated with the Medaille de la Reconnaisse Francaise, France.  He is unmarried, Republican.  His home is at 3 Berkeley Square, Los Angeles 7, California.
