NATHAN NEWBY
A prominent member of the California bar is Nathan Newby, senior member of the firm of Newby & Newby, of Los Angeles. He is a native of North Carolina, and was born in 1868 near Hertford. After receiving his early training in public schools and Hertford Academy he entered the University of Virginia, graduating with the B. L. degree in 1888, and was admitted to the North Carolina bar in 1889.
After practicing in partnership with A. M. Frye under the firm name of Frye & Newby for about six years Mr. Newby moved to California in 1895. In 1901 he became a member of the firm of Valentine & Newby. After its dissolution by reason of Judge Valentine going on the Superior Court bench the firm of Newby & Palmer was formed, and continued until January 1, 1927. The present firm is composed of Nathan Newby and his son, Nathan Newby, Jr., who graduated from the University of California in 1926 with the degree of Juris Doctor.
Mr. Newby holds membership in the American Bar Association, State Bar of California and Los Angeles County Bar Association, as well as the City Club, which he has served as President, Westward-Ho Country Club, and Colonade Club of the University of Virginia.
In addition to his practice Mr. Newby has a number of outside interests, and is a Director of the Deaboard National Bank. He is also known for his activity in affairs of public importance and has served in many civic connections. He was a member of the committee appointed by Mayor Cryer to investigate and recommend the most feasible site for a Los Angeles Union Terminal. He was also a member of the Freeholders who drafted the present charter of the City of Los Angeles, adopted by the voters May 6, 1924.
In 1901 Mr. Newby married Pearl Putnam, and they have seven children, Nathan, Jr., John H., Paul D., Charles R., Ellen C., Perita, and Edith.
