NATHAN NEWBY, SR.

 

 

            High in the ranks of the legal profession and prominent in church and civic affairs, Nathan Newby, Sr., stands among the representative and valued citizens of Los Angeles, where he has resided continuously during the past four decades.  He was born in Perquimans County, North Carolina, September 30, 1868, his parents, Nathan and Frances (McMullan) Newby, being representative of the first families of that state.  His father was a plantation owner of North Carolina, where he spent his entire life, passing away in 1883.

            Nathan Newby of this review prepared for a professional career as a student at the University of Virginia, from which he was graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Laws in 1888.  He became a member of the North Carolina bar September 2, 1889, on attaining his majority, and began the practice of law at Bryson City, that state, where he maintained an office for six years.  At the end of that time, in 1895, he came to Los Angeles, California, and during the early years of his practice here was associated with a number of leading attorneys of the period.  In 1916 he was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court.  His eldest son, Nathan Newby, Jr., was admitted to the bar on the 1st of January, 1927, and has since been associated with him in practice.  Charles R. Newby, a second son, joined his father and his brother in practice following his admission to the bar in 1933.  The firm is accorded an extensive and gratifying clientele, and the junior members bid fair to attain the professional success and prestige of their distinguished father

            For many years Mr. Newby has figured actively in civic affairs, having served as a member of the board of freeholders.  He has been a delegate to the last three general conferences of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, and his aid in the influence were ever found on the side of moral and cultural advancement.  He belongs to the Colonnade Club of the University of Virginia and to the Masonic Club, while along strictly professional lines he has membership in the Los Angeles Bar Association, the Los Angeles County Bar Association, and the American Bar Association.
