FRANCIS S. MONTGOMERY

 

Francis S. Montgomery, lawyer and manager of the Ponet estate with offices at 621 South Hope street, Los Angeles, was born in Concordia, Kansas, June 23, 1878, a son of the late Pius L. and Sarah (Stanton) Montgomery. A half-brother, Archbishop George Montgomery, whose death occurred in 1907, was the head of the Roman Catholic diocese of Monterey and Los Angeles from 1894 to 1903, and was coadjutor Archbishop of San Francisco in the latter year.

Francis S. Montgomery obtained his early training in the parochial and public schools, after which he matriculated in Crieghton (sic) University at Omaha, Nebraska, where he received the Bachelor of Arts degree in 1904. Later he was a student at Georgetown University, Washington, D.C., which conferred upon him the degrees of B.A., M.A., Ph.L. and Ph.D. He came to California and was admitted to practice and from the beginning met with success. In 1912 he was placed in charge of the estate of the late Victor Ponet, his father-in-law, whose biography is given on other pages of this history.

In St. Victor’s Roman Catholic Church of Hollywood, California, on July 3, 1907, Mr. Montgomery was married to Miss Gertrude Ponet, the only child of Victor and Ellen J. (Manning) Ponet. Mrs. Montgomery acquired her educated in convent schools of Los Angeles, in Notre Dame Convent, Brussels, Belgium, and in the institution conducted by the Madames of the Sacred Heart in San Francisco. Four children have blesses this union: Victor Ponet, George Francis, Francis Joseph and William John. The family home is at 8601 Sunset boulevard, Los Angeles.

Mr. Montgomery is a member of the Catholic Church and of the Knights of Columbus. He was honored, June 24, 1927, when he was appointed private chamberlain to Pope Pius XI. He is serving on the board of trustees of the Catholic Seminary, is a member of the Writers Club and a republican in politics. In all civic affairs of southern California and in his social relations he has won the respect of all with whom he has come in contact.
