JOSEPH D. MINSTER
Joseph
D. Minster, publisher of Pacific Coast Record, was born in Toledo, Ohio,
November 3, 1886, the son of Joseph and Cordula
(Miller) Minster. Attended St. John's
University same city.
Mr.
Minster began his newspaper career in 1905 as reporter for the Toledo
News-Bee. Member of
the editorial staff of Los Angeles Times, 1909 to 1919. In 1910 he acquired the “Hotel and Apartment
Record,” which later changed to the Pacific Coast Record, and has since served
as editor and publisher of same. He
founded J. D. Minster & Company, brokerage organization, in 1920 and has
since served as president.
Mr.
Minster organized and supervised a hotel management course at the University of
Southern California in 1915. Served in an
advisory capacity to Department of Food Administration, under Herbert Hoover,
during World War I; chairman of Los Angeles draft board 196, World War II.
Director of Convention Bureau of Chamber of Commerce, 1940-52,
Travelers' Aid, 1941-52, Los Angeles Realty Board, 1932-38. Member Wine and Food Society, 1935-52,
Southern California Hotel Men's Association, 1919-52, and Southern California
Restaurant Association, 1915-52.
Commissioner of Public Health, 1934 to 1939.
Member
of Club Managers Association; Hotel Greeters of Southern California; Catholic
Big Brothers; Knights of Columbus (grand knight, 1923-25; president of Southern
California Chapter, 1927); and member of the following clubs: Thursday Morning Breakfast, Rest Pond,
Epicurean, and Newman. Catholic. Republican.
Mr.
Minster married Berneta M. Blakewell
on November 1, 1911, and has one son, Thomas J.
