WILLIAM BAIRD MARBLE
William Baird Marble is prominently
identified with the glass industry of southern California as vice president and
general manager of the Latchford Glass Company, located at 7441 South Roseberry
Avenue, Los Angeles. He was born in Van
Wert, Ohio, February 9, 1901, his parents being Guilford L. and Cora May (Depuy) Marble, who were natives of Ohio and passed away in
the years 1903 and 1926, respectively.
His grade and high school education was supplemented by study at the
University of Southern California. In
1918 he became associated with the Southern Glass Company, the first successful
bottle plant in southern California, which was started by W. J. Latchford, his
step-father, and was subsequently purchased by one of the national bottle
manufacturing concerns. The Latchford
Glass Company was founded in 1925 by Mr. Latchford and Mr. Marble, and the
business has been very successful. The
output consists of a general line of jars and bottles of all descriptions, with
a specialty of five-gallon water bottles, and in normal times employment is
furnished to approximately two hundred twenty-five people. The plant covers a ground area of four acres
and has seventy thousand square feet of floor space. Bottles are shipped to New York and the Gulf
section, as well as to all local points.
Mr. Marble has manifested splendid executive ability and sound judgment
in the conduct of the enterprise and ranks with the representative and
prosperous young businessmen of his adopted city.
On the 4th of June, 1924,
Mr. Marble was united in marriage to Gladys Rebok, of
Santa Monica, California, and they now have three children: Baird, Mary Cynthia and Sally. The parents
are affiliated with St. John’s Episcopal Church of Los Angeles and are
deservedly popular in social circles here.
Mr. Marble is a member of the Jonathan Club.
