GEORGE J. KLEIN

 

 

            Engaged in automobile sales work for many years before his retirement in 1958, George J. Klein has been an Alhambra resident for nineteen years.  Born in Dennison, Ohio, in 1891, Mr. Klein is the son of Jacob P. and Emma L. (Mueller) Klein, who were both born in Germany.  George Klein has a brother and a sister still living.  His father came to the United States as a young man and later became a machinist foreman for the Santa Fe and Southern Pacific railroads.  Mr. Klein’s uncle was a railroad pioneer who was an early surveyor in California.

            Coming to California at the age of twelve, George J. Klein attended San Bernardino schools and graduated from San Bernardino Business College.  Mr. Klein went into sales work for several different firms, and was one of the first specialty wholesale salesmen of chile con carne in cans; he also worked as a machinist for the Southern Pacific Railroad in East Los Angeles for ten years.  In 1922 he became a salesman for Ford motor cars and trucks; his last position before his retirement being in Los Angeles in auto and truck fleet sales.

            At the First Evangelical Church in Los Angeles, on May 15, 1917, George J. Klein married the former Miss Amy Marie Cordes.  Her father, Reverend Frederich Cordes, was the minister of the First Evangelical Church of Los Angeles at Seventh and Olive streets, where the Bell Telephone building now stands.  Reverend Cordes had fifty-two years of service in the California Conference of the Evangelical Church.  Mrs. Klein was born on June 20, 1896, in San Francisco.  Her brother, Dr. Frederich Cordes, is an eye specialist in San Francisco, and is one of the leading doctors in that field in the United States.  Mr. and Mrs. Klein are the parents of two sons, and a daughter who is now deceased.  Mrs. Marian A. (Eleanor) Schmierer was born in 1922, was the mother of three children, James, Robert and Eileen; she passed away in 1958.  Herbert George Klein, a graduate of the University of Southern California, majoring in journalism, was Press Secretary for Richard M. Nixon while he was the Vice President of the United States and the 1960 Republican nominee for President.  Herb Klein, as he is known, was born in 1918.  He formerly was news editor of the Alhambra Post Advocate and is a past president of the Alhambra Junior Chamber of Commerce; he is now the editor of the San Diego Union, the leading newspaper in San Diego, California.  He and his wife, the former Marjorie Galbraith, are the parents of two daughters, Joanne Louise and Patricia Ann, who attend school in La Jolla, California.  Kenneth F. Klein was born in 1924, and is a graduate of the University of Southern California in engineering and of Stanford University in business administration.  He is the manager of the Minneapolis Honeywell Sales Office in San Diego, and is the father of three sons, Lawrence, Randall and Robert, who attend San Diego schools and an infant daughter, Nancy.  His wife is the former Adelaide Wolf.

            The George Klein’s are members of the First Presbyterian Church of Alhambra.  Mrs. Klein is active in church work, being a group leader, and is interested in working with older people.  Mr. and Mrs. Klein are members of the Alhambra Camera Club.  They enjoy travelling and Mr. Klein likes to fish and to do woodworking in his hobby shop.
