ALEXANDER NESBITT KEMP

 

 

            Alexander Nesbitt Kemp, chairman of the Board of Pacific Mutual Life Insurance Company of Los Angeles, was born in San Francisco, California; son of Alfred Holmes and Elizabeth (Grigor) Kemp.  Received this education at the public schools of Oakland, California.

            Mr. Kemp started his career in 1900 in association with the Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporation, London, England, later becoming junior officer with the New York Branch, 1903-1905.  Associated with N. W. Halsey & Company, investment bankers, San Francisco, California, 1905-1909; comptroller and vice president of Pacific Light & Power Company, San Joaquin Light & Power Corporation, Southern California Gas Company, 1909-17; comptroller and vice president in charge of finances, Southern California Edison Company, 1917-23, and now director and member of Executive and Management Committees of same; executive vice president of California Bank, 1923-28, and now member of Executive Committee and a director of same; president of Pacific Mutual Life Insurance Company, 1935-42, and now chairman of the Board of same and member of executive and securities committees.

            Mr. Kemp was war-time president of American Airlines, Inc., New York City, 1942-45.  Is now director of American Airlines, Inc., The Chase National Bank of New York, Standard Brands Incorporated, New York, Standard Oil Company of California, San Francisco.

            Member of the following clubs:  California, Los Angeles Country, Bel-Air Bay, Los Angeles Yacht (Los Angeles); Links (New York); Bohemian (San Francisco).  He is a Republican.

            In the year 1905 Mr. Kemp married Madeline Mary Haly.  They have two children:  Phyllis (Mrs. Wallace Moir) and Hale Nesbitt.
