WILLIAM HENRY JOYCE, JR.

 

William Henry Joyce, Jr., president of Joyce, Inc., of Pasadena, California, was born march 11, 1900 in Los Angeles, California, the son of William Henry and Josephine (Haskins) Joyce. Student at the University of California from 1918 to 1920; Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity.

Mr. Joyce was associated with the National City Bank of New York City, 1921-22; California Bank, 1923-29. Organized the Pasadena Slipper Company in 1929, of which he was owner and president until 1939, when the name changed to Joyce, Inc., of which he was president from 1939 to 1950; joined the Economic Cooperation Administration as assistant administrator of operations, 1950-51; and again president of Joyce, Inc., since 1951. Joyce, Inc. is an internationally known manufacturer of women’s casual shoes, with factories in Columbus and Xenia, Ohio, Manchester, New Hampshire, and Los Angeles; these plants total a daily production of seventy-five hundred pair of shoes. Mr. and Mrs. Joyce have won the Lord & Taylor Award, the Neiman-Marcus Fashion Award, and the Fashion Trade Award.

During World War I he served with United States Army, August to November, 1918, Officers Training Camp. In World War II he made gas masks under government contract in a separate factory, while his own plant continued manufacturing shoes; also managed to attend Civilian orientation Course at United States Army’s Command and General Staff School; member of the O.P.A.’s Industrial Advisory Committee on shoes and served in a similar capacity on the W.P.B.

Mr. Joyce was trustee of The Town Hall, Inc., New York City, 1949 to 1952, Occidental College of Los Angeles since 1950, Committee for Economic Development, New York City, since 1950, and United States Inter-America Council, New York City, since 1950. Member of Board of Directors of Boys Club of Pasadena since 1952, Family Service of Pasadena from 1947 to 1948, and Pasadena Chapter of American Red Cross from 1946 to 1948 (member of Advisory Board since 1952); member of Board of Directors of Town Hall of Los Angeles, and chairman of Industrial Relations Section from 1944 to 1946.

Member of the following clubs: Annandale Country, San Gabriel Country, California, Klutter, Burning Tree (Bethesda, Maryland), Twilight (Pasadena), and former member of Los Angeles Yacht, and Newport Harbor Yacht Clubs. Episcopalian. Finds recreation in gold and boating. His hobbies are industrial relations, international affairs, and education.

Mr. Joyce married Faie Jarmel in Los Angeles, California, on February 14, 1938 (designer in Joyce, Inc.); children: Jill Joyce, born July 14, 1940 and Anthony Winner (step-son), born August 16, 1931. Their home is in San Marino, California, at 1440 Circle Drive.
