MATTISON
BOYD JONES
For many years Mattison B. Jones, senior member of the law firm of Jones, Stephenson, Palmer & Moore, of Los Angeles, has been one of the best known members of the bar of that city. He is a native of Kentucky, born in 1869, and received his early education in public schools. He later entered the University of Kentucky, which conferred on him the A. B. degree in 1894.
The following two years Mr. Jones served as Principal of Laurel Seminary, at the same time studying law. He was admitted to the Kentucky bar in 1895, but after a few months of practice he resumed teaching, first at Williamsburg Institute and then at the University of Kentucky. In 1899 he moved to California, entering general practice at Los Angeles.
In 1905 Mr. Jones became senior member of the firm of Jones & Drake, which continued for four years. He later organized the firm of Jones & Evans, which was dissolved in 1917, and in 1920 became a senior member of the firm of Jones, Wilson & Stephenson, which later became Jones & Stephenson and then Jones, Stephenson, Palmer & Moore.
Mr. Jones is also well known in fraternal circles being a 32° Mason, Shriner and Knight Templar. He is both a York and Scottish Rite Mason, and is General Grand Arch Captain in the General Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of the United States, as well as Grand Principal Conductor of Work of the Royal and Select Masons of California.
Mr. Jones holds membership in the American Bar Association, State Bar of California, and the Los Angeles County Bar Association, as well as the University Club, Oakmont Country Club and Surf & Sand Club. In 1900 he married Antoinette Ewell Smith, of Louisville, Ky., and they have one daughter, Lillian Winifred, now Mrs. Harold B. Kershman.
