EDWIN INGHAM
(Deceased)
Edwin
A. Ingham (deceased) was the City Manager of Alhambra from November 8, 1945,
until his untimely death on November 28, 1955.
Well known throughout southern California, Mr. Ingham had a long and
varied career as an engineer and by training and experience; he served as City
Manager of Coronado for nine years, of Glendale for eight years, and of
Alhambra for ten years, a total of twenty-seven years of service as a City
Manager, a near record for the country.
Born
on August 4, 1887, in Chicago, Illinois, Mr. Ingham was the son of Elmer and
Ellie (Colegrove) Ingham, who were school
teachers. He received his early
education in San Fernando, graduating from San Fernando High School, where his
mother was principal for twenty-two years.
In 1912 he graduated from the University of California at Berkeley with
honors in civil engineering.
He
was a member of various organizations, and held offices in several of them. He served as vice-president of the
International City Managers Association, president of the California City
Managers Association and president of the San Diego Section of the American
Society of Civil Engineers. He also
served as president of the Alhambra District YMCA in 1948-49 and was a member
of the National Council YMCA in 1949-50.
An active member of the First Methodist Church of Alhambra, Mr. Ingham
served as a member of their board of trustees for many years. He was an active Rotarian for twenty-seven
years, with a twenty-seven year perfect attendance record. Mr. Ingham served as president of the
Coronado Rotary Club in 1933-34 and president of the Glendale Rotary Club
during 1943-44 and was active in the Alhambra Rotary Club until his death. Fraternally he was a member of the Elks
Lodge, Masons, Sigma Xi (Honorary Scientific), Tau Beta Pi (Engineering
Scholarship), and Abracadabra of the University of California at Berkeley.
On
May 21, 1913, Ed Ingham married Miss Irene Powell, formerly of Whitby, Ontario, Canada.
Mr. and Mrs. Ingham attended grammar and high school together. Mrs. Ingham recalls that her husband was the
first boy to carry her books while they attended grammar school. Their son, Theodore A., is a graduate of the
University of California at Berkeley, and is married with three children, two
sons, Robert and James, and a daughter, Lani. He resides in Lafayette, California, and is
the Sales Manager for Oscar Krenz Manufacturing
Company of Berkeley, California.
Mr.
Ingham’s hobbies were painting and photography.
Many of his paintings are in the homes of his friends. His sporting hobby was golf and he was an
ardent football fan.
Irene
(Powell) Ingham, widow of Edwin A. Ingham, is well known for her work and
active participation with the Southern California-Arizona Conference of
Methodist Churches. She served a term as
president of the Women’s Society of Christian Service and is presently a member
of the Board of Missions for the Methodist Church. This board allocates $23,000,000 each year
for their Missions around the world.
She
was born on April 27, 1889, in Whitby, Ontario,
Canada, the daughter of Frank A. and Anne J. (McClung) Powell. Coming to California before she was of school
age, the Powell family settled in San Fernando, where she attended grammar and
high schools. Mrs. Ingham attended the
University of Southern California, majoring in English. Her father was manager of the Southern
California Water Company in San Fernando for many years.
Active
in various organizations, Mrs. Ingham was president of the Alhambra Rotary Anns
in 1953, president of the Woman’s Auxiliary to the Goodwill Industries of
Southern California during 1948 through 1950.
She is a Trustee of the Southern California School of Theology at
Claremont, California, and formerly was a member of the Board of Directors of
the Methodist Hospital in Arcadia, California.
She has also served on the Board of Directors of the Alhambra Red
Cross. Mrs. Ingham also holds
memberships in Pi Beta Phi and the P.E.O. fraternal organizations.
Mrs.
Ingham’s philosophy is—“My Church is my life’s work”.
