JAMES MacDONALD HYDE

James MacDonald Hyde, well-known mining engineer, is rendering effective and valuable public service as a member of the Los Angeles city council.  He was born at Mystic Bridge, Connecticut, June 25, 1873, a son of William Penn and Seraphine S. (Carr) Hyde.  His early education was acquired in grade and high schools and his more advanced intellectual training was received at Leland Stanford Junior University in California, from which institution he was graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Arts in 1901.  Thereafter he was connected with the California State Mining Bureau as curator in 1901-02 and next was assistant professor of mining and metallurgy at the University of Oregon from 1903 until 1906.  In the latter year he was identified with the Guanajuato Consolidated Mining & Milling Company as metallurgist, while in 1907 he became superintendent of the Manhattan Ore, Reduction & Milling Company.  In 1910 he served as field agent with the Mexican Syndicate, Ltd.  During the twelve-year period between 1907 and 1919 he was engaged as an independent operator and construction engineer, and for the succeeding seven years was professor of metallurgy at Leland Stanford Junior University.  In 1926 he resumed activities as a private mine operator.  Mr. Hyde is the inventor of the Hyde roughing and cleaning flotation process.  His name is on the membership roll of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, and fraternally he is affiliated with the Masons.  He served as vice president of the board of public works in Los Angeles in 1929-30 and was subsequently elected to the city council, of which he is now a member.  His political views are in accord with the Republican Party, and his record of public service is indeed a commendable one.

In 1903 Mr. Hyde was united in marriage to Miss Bessie L. Ransom and they are the parents of a daughter, Helen Elizabeth Hyde.
