MRS.
MELBA HUNT
Among
those outstanding women of Los Angeles who have worked for and encouraged the
betterment of the cultural, social and educational welfare of the city is Mrs.
Melba Hunt, president of the Schubert-Wa Wan Club, a
strictly cultural organization. She is
also junior past president of the Cosmos Club, having served as its president
from June, 1932, to June, 1934. This
club was federated in 1904 in the district, state and county, and in 1921 it
was incorporated. Its membership is
limited to two hundred and there is a long waiting list.
Mrs.
Melba Hunt is a native of Boston, Massachusetts, and is a daughter of Hugh Carr
and Elizabeth (MacLean) Perkins, natives of Maine and Scotland, respectively. Mr. Perkins was a leading contractor and
builder in Boston for many years and after locating in Los Angeles in 1905
continued his building operations successfully and is now living retired. Mrs. Hunt attended the public schools in Los
Angeles, also was a student for a time at the University of Southern
California, and attended the Davis College of Music. She has specialized in piano under Thilo Becker. On
July 30, 1917, she married John R. Hunt, who is connected with the Los Angeles
County school system, and they have a daughter, Bethalva
Hunt.
Since
young womanhood Mrs. Hunt has been interested in social subjects, that is,
those forces which make for improvement in the scale of living and the bringing
of the finer things of life to the attention of others. Club work appealed to her nature and her
innate ability, and as a consequence she has been a prominent figure in this
phase of civic activity. She was elected
president of the Cosmos Club in May, 1932, and served two years; in June, 1934,
she was elected president of the Schubert-Wa Wan
Club. Besides her duties in club work
Mrs. Hunt is a member of the advisory board of the Woman’s Auxiliary of the Los
Angeles Chamber of Commerce; is a teacher of piano and a radio artist of
ability. She is affiliated with the
leading musical clubs of the city, a member of the Dominant Club, and of the
Phi Beta Sorority. In 1934 Mrs. Hunt,
with her husband and daughter, made a trip around the world, visiting all points
of interest in their journey.
