EDWARD
HOPKINS
On
the roster of county officials in Los Angeles County appears the name of Edward
W. Hopkins, who has filled the position of assessor for more than a quarter of
a century by appointment and repeated reelection. He was born in Oskaloosa, Iowa, March 25, 1863,
a son of John Young and Mary Ann (Needham) Hopkins. He came to California early in life and was a
young man of thirty-two years when in 1895 he entered upon his official duties
as deputy assessor of Los Angeles County, continuing in that capacity until
appointed to the position of assessor in 1907.
Three years later, in 1910, he was elected county assessor, to which
office he has been reelected every four years to the
present time. No higher testimonial of
his capability, efficiency and trustworthiness could be given. During his tenure of office Mr. Hopkins has
been an interested witness of the wonderful growth and development of Los
Angeles County and the city of Los Angeles in particular, which now has a population
of one million, five hundred thousand.
On
the 4th of April, 1895, in Los Angeles, Mr. Hopkins was united in
marriage to Martha L. McVicker. He is a Mason and member of the Mystic
Shrine, is also affiliated with the Knights of Pythias and belongs to the
Jonathan Club. Mr. Hopkins resides at
North Whittier Heights and has an office in the Hall of Justice in Los Angeles.
