LESLIE
RANDALL HEWITT
Among the distinguished exponents of the legal profession in California none stands higher than Judge Leslie R. Hewitt, of Los Angeles. His record in public office and on the bench is a splendid one, while in private practice he has been connected with some of the most important litigation before the courts.
Judge Hewitt is a native of Washington, and was born in Olympia in 1867. While still very young he moved with his parents to Los Angeles, where he received his early educational training in public schools. He then entered the University of California, and after graduating with the B. L. degree in 1890 he engaged in the study of law, being admitted to the bar in 1893.
Until 1898 Judge Hewitt engaged in practice in Los Angeles, and then became Deputy City Attorney of that city. In 1906 he became City Attorney, serving until 1910, when he resigned upon his election to the State Senate from the 38th Senatorial district. In 1913 he was appointed Judge of the Superior Court, and was elected and re-elected to the bench in 1914 and 1920. Judge Hewitt resigned in 1924 and re-entered private practice.
From 1910 to 1913 Judge Hewitt was retained by the Los Angeles Harbor Commission as Special Attorney, and in collaboration with James A. Anderson drew up the Consolidation Act in 1909, forming a union of the cities of Los Angeles, San Pedro and Wilmington and making the harbor possible. He was attorney for the City of Los Angeles in the famous tideland cases, involving property valued at $50,000,000, and it was during his service as City Attorney that the Los Angeles Aqueduct project was inaugurated. Judge Hewitt holds membership in the American Bar Association, State Bar of California, and Los Angeles County Bar Association. He is a 32° Mason, Shriner and Knight of Pythias, and a member of the Jonathan, City and California Clubs. In 1901 he married Mable Young Eastwood and they have three children, Beatrice, Asa R., and Emily.
