SAMUEL STEWART HAYES

 

Samuel Stewart Hayes, radio, television and motion picture news reporter, sports caster and actor; was born in Cookesville, Illinois, November 4, 1904; the son of William Lafayette Hayes, minister, and Nancy (Carmichael) Hayes. He was educated in Baldwin High School (Birmingham, Michigan). Manual Arts High and Hollywood High, Los Angeles, California, and a member of Stanford University Class of ‘29. Majored in dramatics. He starred for three years consecutively in the Mt. Tamalpais Mountain Play, Bay Area, San Francisco, greatest role, “Peer Gynt” in ‘29 acclaimed in Norway as greatest performance of Henrik Ibsen’s famous character. Toured this country and Canada in “Appearances” 1928; joined National Players of NBC, San Francisco in 1929; chief announcer, sports announcer, writer, producer, KTAB, San Francisco, 1930; announcer, actor, writer, producer; United Broadcasting Co., Los Angeles, 1930. He originated Richfield Reporter News Series NBC Pacific Coast Network, 1931; ‘31 to 1937, 1874 newscases as Richfield Reporter, 70 motion picture roles, 74 football broadcasts, 200 personal appearances. Bank of America news reporter on CBS, 1937-38; sportscaster, Associated Oil Co., 1938; Commentator on The People’s Vote, Mennen Company, CBS, 1938-39; Inaugurated Sperry Breakfast News NBC, 1939, also Weekly Spectator series. Recorded “Through the Sports Glass” series for NBC Recording Division, 1939, also “Touchdown Tips” football season shows recorded 1939-1952; Mobil Pigskin Preview football commentary for General Petroleum corporation, Mobilgas, 1939-41 and 1946. He was co-publisher of “Touchdown Tips” football forecast sheets from 1938-1952; started Studebaker News NBC, 1949, moved it to MBS—Don Lee Network, 1950, started Johnson’s Wax News, coast to coast, MBS, 1952; moved Sperry Breakfast News from NBC to MBS—Don Lee, 1952. Inaugurated Weekly Spectator series on Alaskan stations for Alaskan Salmon Institute, 1951, same series went Coast to Coast, MBS, 1952; became exclusive Don Lee, MBS, 1952, exception of “Touchdown Tips” recorded for RCA-Victor 1950-1952 and syndicated nationally on 200 stations.

Mr. Hayes is a member of Screen Actors Guild, American Federation Radio Artists, Lakeside Golf Club, Stanford Alumni Association (life member) Ephebian Society of Los Angeles, Sigma Alpha Epsilon national fraternity, Greater Los Angeles Press Club. Presbyterian.

Mr. Hayes has a son Ron Hayes, 2nd Lt. Marine Corps—Quantico, and a daughter, Diane Hayes.
