IVAH B. HAYMAN

Like so many early residents of Rosemead, Ivah B. Hayman and her family, who came to the area in 1927, were attracted by the quiet, peaceful, rural atmosphere to be found there at the time.  A native of Hazelton, Iowa, Mrs. Hayman moved to Los Angeles in 1914, living there until 1927 when, though her husband was employed in Los Angeles, they felt they would like to get away from city living and have a little land where Mrs. Hayman’s widowed mother could raise poultry.  Ivah Hayman soon became active in the new environment, joining the Rosemead Community Methodist Church as a charter member in 1928, becoming active in its Women’s Society and serving as president of the Ladies’ Aid Society in 1939 – 1940.  As her daughters were growing up she participated in the work of the Parent-Teachers’ Association of Muscatel School and was one of the organizers of the Rosemead Girl Scout Troop of the Pasadena Council.  Her eldest daughter was a charter member of the troop.  Mrs. Hayman has also been a leader in the Rosemead Women’s Club and its president from 1952 – 1954.  Many years ago she was regional chairman for the Los Angeles District of the California Federation of Women’s Clubs, and is now a member of the Los Angeles County Board Alumnae of Women’s Clubs.  Always willing to accept responsibility, Mrs. Hayman has been active on the community drives and served on the Park Committee for Rosemead’s swimming pool in 1954.  She has also served on election boards for a number of years.

The daughter of Homer L. Darby of Ahlsberg, Vermont, and Nancy Belle (Coy) Darby of Hazelton, Iowa, Ivah Hayman was born in her mother’s home town on October 21, 1890.  She received her elementary education            in Hazelton, graduated from Anita High School in Anita, Iowa, and took a business course at Cornbelt Business College in Oelwein, Iowa.

After coming to Los Angeles she worked as a secretary until her marriage on September 16, 1916, to Louis A. Hayman of Kansas City, Missouri.  Mr. Hayman was in the wholesale jewelry business for sixty years, forty-seven of those years with the E. W. Reynolds Company in Los Angeles until his retirement in 1958.  The Hayman’s have two daughters, both talented musically and both now married.  Mrs. David (Marilyn Hayman) McCullough attended Muscatel School, El Monte High School, and Woodbury College.  In her school days she was an outstanding pianist.  She lives in Rosemead with her husband, a business and tax consultant in West Covina.  Mrs. Wyman L. (Shirley Hayman) Graham now teaches music in Orient, Iowa.  She was concertmistress of the El Monte High School orchestra while a student there, and is a singer and violinist.  She attended Pasadena Junior College and is a graduate of the University of Southern California.  Mrs. Graham herself was born on Easter Sunday, and two of her three children were born on holidays:  Kenneth, born on Lincoln’s birthday, William, born on New Year’s Day, and Mary Louise.

Clever at needlework, Ivah Hayman makes hobbies of sewing and rug making.  Like almost all Rosemead residents, she enjoys gardening.
