He decided upon law as a profession, and soon after leaving college took up his studies. After reading two years he was admitted to practice by the Supreme Court of California in the year 1895. He began practice at once, but gave it up temporarily two years later, when he was appointed Clerk of the Los Angeles City Council, serving in this capacity until 1902.
Upon the expiration of his term as Clerk of the Council he was engaged for legal work by the firm of Dunn and Crutcher, and he remained with them until 1905, when the firm name was changed to Bicknell, Gibson, Trask, Dunn and Crutcher. He continued in association with the new firm and in 1908, when Judge Bicknell with drew from it, became and active member. The name at that time underwent another change, being known as Gibson, Trask, Dunn and Crutcher.
