Biographies
WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON
William
Henry Harrison, architect, was born in Richmond, Indiana, January 2, 1897; the
son of Thomas H. and Claribel (Barrett)
Harrison. He graduated from Cornell
University in 1921 with his B.Arch. Degree.
Mr.
Harrison began his career in 1921 as a draftsman for Starrett
& Van Vleck, New York City; then
designer for Bass-Knowlton Company at Indianapolis, Indiana, from 1921 to 1925;
with Robert Frost Daggett at Indianapolis from 1925 to 1926. Since 1930 he has been in architectural
practice, under his own name, at Los Angeles, California.
Mr.
Harrison's architectural work has been illustrated in professional publications
and he is the recipient of the following awards: first prize in two residential competitions
in 1923 and 1931; co-winner of first prize in the Lehigh Airport Competition in
1929; received Certificates of Merit, Southern California from American
Institute of Architects in 1938, of which he is a member. Received Award of Merit
school design from American Association of School Administrations and Southern
California Chapter, American Institute of Architects, Joint Jury, 1952.
Designed El Rancho High School, Puente Union High School, Whittier Union High School, additions to Fullerton Union
High School, Campus of Whittier College, other additional buildings and
commercial and residential work.
Member
of Cornell University Alumni Association of California and also chairman of
Board of Directors of same; member of Los Angeles Planning Congress 1943-52,
Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce, Whittier Chamber of Commerce, California
Chamber of Commerce, United States Chamber of Commerce, Whittier City Planning
Commission 1943-52, Society of Friends
and the University Club.
Mr.
Harrison married Josephine A. Lewis on June 21, 1922, children Martha Jo
(Hubbard) and William Lewis. Home is in
Whittier, California, at 963 East Philadelphia Street.
