JOSEPH V. GUILFOYLE
Joseph V. Guilfoyle, secretary of
the Southern California Retail Hardware Association, was born in New York City
on September 22, 1887, his parents being James F. and Mary A. (Millar)
Guilfoyle, both of whom are deceased.
The father, a doctor of veterinary medicine by profession, entered the
custom house service in New York and subsequently became assistant collector of
the Port of New York, serving in that capacity for twenty-eight years.
Joseph V. Guilfoyle acquired his
early education in private schools and continued his studies at Johns Hopkins
University at Baltimore, Maryland, from which he was graduated with the degree
of Bachelor of Arts in Electrical Engineering in 1912. He was connected with the engineering
department of the New York Edison and Associated Companies until the United
States became involved in the World War.
He then joined the Engineering Corps of the United States Army, was
commissioned a captain and served in France for fourteen months, participating
in two major offensives. Following his
return to this country he was identified in the capacity of sales manager with
two large concerns engaged in the manufacture of electrical household
appliances. Subsequently he spent two
years in Chicago as a merchandising counsel for department stores and similar
business institutions. Next he was assistant to the merchandising manager of Marshall Field
& company for four years and then served for three years as sales manager
of the Dressler Hardware Company in Los Angeles. It was in 1930 that he became secretary of
the Southern California Retail Hardware Association, the duties of which
position he has discharged most capably to the present time. He is a director of the Associated
Secretaries of Southern California, and secretary-treasurer of the Radio and
Music Trades Association of Southern California, Limited.
In Chicago, Illinois, Mr. Guilfoyle
married Miss Verna Willey, of that city, and they now reside in North
Hollywood.
As Republican candidate of the
forty-second district for the House of Representatives, Mr. Guilfoyle advocated
the passing of laws to protect the taxpayer and laws to protect bank
deposits. He is a member of the Jonathan
Club, vice president of the community Builders of America and past vice
commander of the North Hollywood American Legion. Golf and tennis are his favorite forms of
recreation.
