DANIEL GARFIELD
GRANT
Daniel Garfield Grant is widely
known as president of the D. G. Grant Company, successful investment broker of
Los Angeles. He was born in Albuquerque,
New Mexico, August 4, 1881, his parents being Angus A. and Joanna (McMillan)
Grant, both of whom were natives of Canada and of Scotch descent. The father, who became a pioneer railroad
contractor of California in 1885, founded the firm of Grant Brothers in
association with his brothers, Lewis Alexander and John R. Grant, and engaged
in much important railroad work through the west and southwest.
Daniel G. Grant acquired his
elementary education in Contra Costa County, California, and continued his
studies in Leland Stanford University at Palo Alto. His initial business
experience was gained in railroad construction work with the firm a Grant
Brothers, which had its headquarters in Los Angeles. In 1921 he became associated with J. J.
Doran, investment and security broker of Los Angeles and during the two
succeeding years not only gained a thorough knowledge of the business but
determined to personally engage in it.
On the 1st of January, 1923, he purchased an interest therein
and in June, 1927, acquired the interest of Mr. Doran, thus becoming sole owner
of the business, which has since been conducted under the name of the D. G.
Grant Company. He carried on his
interests independently until 1928, when the business was incorporated, with D.
G. Grant as president, Edward T. Cook as vice president and Miss Alta R. Kalley as secretary-treasurer.
On the 12th of June,
1907, Mr. Grant was married to Miss Nannie Dillon, a representative of a
pioneer family of Los Angeles and sister of Dr. Edward T. Dillon, well known
physician and surgeon of Los Angeles and Richard J. Dillon, an attorney of this
city. Mr. and Mrs. Grant are the parents
of three sons and a daughter, namely:
Richard Angus Grant, Daniel Garfield Grant, Jr., John Edward Grant and
Margaret Dillon Grant.
Fraternally Mr. Grant is affiliated
with Los Angeles Lodge, No. 99, B. P. O. E., and with Los Angeles Council, No.
621, Knights of Columbus. He is also a
member of the California Club, the Wilshire Country Club and the Newman Club. In line with his brokerage business he has
been a member of the Los Angeles Stock Exchange since 1927 and of the Los
Angeles Curb Exchange since its organization in 1928, serving as its president
the first two years and as a governor of the organization from its inception.
