Biographies
ROY LaVERNE FRENCH
Roy LaVerne French, director of School of Journalism University of Southern California, was born in Eureka, Kansas, August 6, 1888. He is the son of Albert Lord and Cora Alice (Emmerson) French.
Received his A.B. from University of Wisconsin in 1923 and his M.A. in 1924; Oberlander Trust Fellow with study of papers in Germany, 1936.
Mr. French was instructor at the School of Journalism, University of Wisconsin 1923 to 1924; organizer and head of Department of Journalism, University of North Dakota, 1924 to 1927; chairman and organizer of Department of Journalism at University of Southern California in 1927 and director of School of Journalism since 1933. He is co-owner and publisher of the Chalfant Press, printing the only newspapers in Eastern California, Inyo Independent, Inyo Register, The Owens Valley Progress Citizen, and the Bridgeport Chronicle-Union.
During World War I, Mr. French served as a private with the American Expeditionary Forces, 1918-19, and was wounded in action; awarded the Purple Heart. In World War II, he served as major with the Air Corps, 1942, and was on duty with the 8th Bomber Command Headquarters in England as specialist in bomber raid reporting; then with Intelligence, September 1942 to 1943, with headquarters of 2d Air Force as instructor on combat intelligence, July 1943 to March 1944. Inactive since 1944.
Member of California Newspaper Publishers Association; American Association of Teachers of Journalism; National Collegiate Players; Live Oaks Tennis Association, American Institute of Journalists (treasurer); Sigma Delta Chi (national president, 19926-26) and Theta Delta Chi Fraternities.
Mr. French married Una Odetta Meredith on September 22, 1917. Their home is in Alhambra, California, at 901 North Cordova Street.
