FRED D. FAGG, JR.

 

Fred D. Fagg, Jr., president, University of Southern California was born in Brooklyn New York July 30, 1896, the son of Fred Daw and Ida Alzina (Chase). Served as second Lieutenant pilot 92nd Aero Squadron American Expeditionary Forces 1917-1918. Graduating from the University of Redlands in 1920 with degree of Bachelor of Arts, he received his master’s degree at Harvard in 1921, Doctor of Jurisprudence at Northwestern University in 1927 and Doctor of laws at University of Redlands in 1939.

His career as an educator and authority in the field of economics and jurisprudence particularly that relating to aviation began in 1921 with his appointment as an assistant in the Department of Economics at Harvard University 1921-1923, instructor in economics Northwestern University 1923-1927; assistant and associate professor of economics University of Southern California; exchange professor, Institute of Air Law at Institute fir Luftrecht, Konigsberg, Germany 1928-1929; professor of law, Northwestern University 1929-1947. Doctor Fagg was also dean, School of Commerce 1938-1939, vice president and dean of faculties 1939-1947 Northwestern University. He was managing director, Air Law Institute, Chicago, Illinois 1929-1939; founder and editor in chief of Journal of Radio Law 1930-1931; legal advisor to the Federal Aviation Commission, 1934-1935; legal counsel United States Senate Sub committee on Aircraft Investigation 1935-1936; director air commerce, United States Department of Commerce 1937- 1938; consulting expert, Civil Aeronautics Authority 1938-1939; director, Northwestern University Institute of Aeronautics 1946-1947 and president of the University of Southern California since July 1947.

Doctor Fagg was a member of the Illinois Aeronautics Commission 1931-1937; secretary, National Association of State Aviation Officials 1932-1937; American member, Comitie International Technique d’Experts Juridques A’eriens 1934-1940; member of National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics 1937-1938; Chairman of California Aeronautics Commission since 1947, and contributor to law reviews; Member of American, Illinois State, Chicago and Los Angeles Bar Associations and State Bar of California, Delta Theta Phi, Pi Kappa Delta, Delta Sigma Rho, Alpha Kappa Psi, Order of Coif, Alpha Eta Rho, Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi and Blue Key.

 

Club memberships are California and University, Los Angeles, California; Law and Legal, Chicago, Illinois.

On August 25, 1924 he married Miss Vera Wilkes and their children are Barbara Louise and Fred Daw.
