DR. HUBERT EATON

 

 

Dr. Hubert Eaton, scientist, business executive and art patron, was born in Liberty, Missouri. He is the son of Professor James Rodolphus and Martha (Lewright) Eaton.

Graduated from Williamd Jewell College with the A.B. degree; received honorary LL.D. and L.H.D. degrees from various colleges.

Dr. Eaton began his career as assistant chief chemist for the Boston & Montana Consolidated Copper Company (now Anaconda Copper Company) at Great Falls, Montana; then chief metallurgical chemist for Teziutlan Copper Company in Mexico; general manager for Adaven Mining & Smelting Company in Nevada. Now chairman of Advisory Board of Bank of America, Glendale, California; founder and chairman of the Board of the American Security & Fidelity Corporation, Forest Lawn Company, and Forest Lawn Life Insurance Company.

Dr. Eaton originated (1916) the “Memorial Park Plan” which has revolutionized cemeteries throughout the United States, and in exemplification thereof founded and built Forest Lawn Memorial Park, noted for its first substitution of bronze tablets, set level with the lawn instead of tombstones. He has great collections of large-size works of famous European and American sculptors and of stained glass; Moretti re-creation in stained glass of Leonardo da Vinci’s “Last Super,” Jan Styka’s immense painting “The Crucifixion,” three famous churches, etc. He is the author of pamphlets on cemetery development.

Knighted order Crown of Italy in 1932 by King Victor Emanuel III; Star of Solidarity in 1951 by Italian Republic; elected fellow of Royal Society of Arts (Great Britain). He was the only American elected professor member of Academy of Fine Arts, Carrara; Academy of Arts and Design, Florence, Italy, 1952.

Trustee of William Jewell College and of Redlands University; associate of Caltech, Occidental College and of Pomona College; vice president of Boy Scouts of America, Los Angeles Area. Member of Society of Sons of the Revolution; Society of Colonial Wars; Sigma Nu and Alpha Phi Gamma (honorary) fraternities; Masonic Order (Knight Templar, Shriner); and member of the following clubs: California, Jonathan, Los Angeles Country, Beverly, Aliso Gun, and La Grulla Gun.

Dr. Eaton married Anna Munger-Henderson on December 10, 1918, and has one son, Roy.
