CLARE M. DUTTON
CLYDE S. DUTTON
The
well known paint contracting firm of Dutton & Sons at 425 South Fourth
Street in Alhambra, owned and successfully operated by the twin brothers Clare M.
Dutton and Clyde S. Dutton, has been in business for 39 years. The father, Mr. William Dutton, started the
business with his son Clare M. Dutton in 1922.
The twin son Clyde S. Dutton, who had homesteaded land near Kingman,
Arizona, moved to California in 1932, and became a partner in the firm of
Dutton & Sons.
Clare
M. and Clyde S. Dutton were born at Portis, Kansas, on January 20, 1902 to
William Dutton and Marcia (Smith) Dutton.
Both received their elementary schooling in their hometown and both graduated
from high school in Portis, Kansas. In
their youth they helped their father on the farm. In 1922 when the sons were 20 years old, Mr.
William Dutton moved to California with his family, and started the paint
contracting business in Alhambra. He was
active in it until his death in 1941.
Mrs. William Dutton, now 79 years old, lives at 315 South Chapel Street
in Alhambra.
Mr.
Clare M. Dutton was married to Elizabeth Angell of Portis, Kansas, on May 10,
1922 in Osborne, Kansas, at the minister’s parsonage. The Dutton’s are members of the Alhambra
Presbyterian Church. They have seven
children and twenty-one grandchildren.
Daughter
Louise (Mrs. Frank) Daggett lives with her husband and three children in
Reseda, California. Son Daniel Dutton,
in business with his father, and his wife live with their four children in
Temple City, California. Bette (Mrs.
George) Miller and her husband live in Whittier, California, with their four
children. Mary is married to Mr. Murray Dosch. They have
three children and reside in Inglewood. June,
who has three children, is Mrs. Kenneth Clark of San Gabriel. William Dutton is football coach at Santa Ana
Junior College. He lives with his wife
and two children in Santa Ana. Thomas
Dutton is Assistant to the Dean of the University of California at
Berkeley. He, his wife and their two
children make their home in Richmond, California.
Mr.
Clare M. Dutton likes to go fishing and is an enthusiastic rock collector. The Dutton’s have a cabin at Crestline, and
whenever possible they spend weekends there.
Mr. Clare M. Dutton is a member of the Chamber of Commerce.
Mr.
Clyde S. Dutton married Miss Julia Ives of Highland Park, California, on July
17, 1931. They have one daughter, Ellen
(Mrs. Gary) Anderson. The Anderson’s live in Alhambra, and have one son,
Richard Lee Anderson, 6 months old, who is the pride of his grandfather.
Mr.
Clyde S. Dutton is a charter member of the Alhambra Police Reserves, and has
been a volunteer worker for 19 years.
The group consists of 35 members, and he is one of the two original
members left, and one of the oldest auxiliary policemen in Alhambra.
The
two brothers, Clare M. Dutton and Clyde S. Dutton, take great pride in
excellent workmanship, and are forever striving to uphold their reputation for
good and reliable work.
