VERNON G. DINGLEY
Uncle
Sam’s number one representative in Monterey Park is Vernon G. Dingley, who was
appointed to the position of Postmaster of this city on March 7, 1961.
Born
in Payette, Idaho, on April 24, 1921, Mr. Dingley is the son of Alvin R. and
Gwendolyn Dingley, who traveled to California the year he was born. His father has been associated with the
Wilshire Oil Company for thirty-seven years as a stationary engineer.
Vernon
Dingley received his early education at Central Elementary School in
Montebello, California, and then attended Alhambra High School, graduating in
1939. During his attendance at Pasadena
City College, Mr. Dingley majored in machine technology.
In
January of 1941, Mr. Dingley became an employee of the Monterey Park Post
Office, and in June of that year passed his civil service examination, and
attained career Civil Service status. He
was appointed to classified substitute carrier in September of 1941.
Mr.
Dingley enlisted in the United States Army at Fort MacArthur, California, on
March 18, 1942. He attended Officers
Candidate School at Fort Knox, Kentucky, where he was commissioned a Second
Lieutenant on June 12, 1943. He served
stateside with the Twentieth Armored Division and the Third Armored Division
overseas from July, 1944, until December, 1945, and saw action in France, in
Belgium, and in Germany. He received
four campaign stars: The Silver Star for
gallantry in action and the Bronze Star for heroic achievement. He was awarded the Purple Heart during the Rhineland
Campaign. Mr. Dingley was honorably
discharged from military service as a First Lieutenant on February 20, 1946.
In
April of 1946, the young future Postmaster of Monterey Park returned to his
chosen career with the Monterey Park Post Office as a letter carrier. Three years later, he affected an
inter-office transfer, to the position of clerk and in February of 1951, he
received a promotion to supervisor. His
position prior to his appointment of Postmaster was that of Foreman of Mails.
A
member of the Good Shepherd Presbyterian Church of Monterey Park, Mr. Dingley
is currently serving on the Board of Trustees as Recording Clerk. He is affiliated with the Monterey Park
Kiwanis Club and has been elected a member of their Board of Directors for
1962. He was a member of several postal
employee organizations and was elected President of Branch No. 302, San Gabriel
Valley Postal Supervisors Association, National
Association of Postal Supervisors in 1960.
Vernon
G. Dingley married the former Miss Verna M. Davis on November 7, 1943, in a
ceremony which took place in Yuma, Arizona.
Mrs. Dingley, who is a native of Monterey Park, attended and graduated
from local schools, being a member of the graduating class from Mark Keppel
High School in 1941. Her parents were
among the original settlers in Ramona Acres.
She has been Sergeant-at-Arms of the State of California National
Association of Postal Supervisors Auxiliary.
Her favorite hobby is sewing.
Mr.
and Mrs. Dingley are the parents of three boys:
James V., aged 15; Larry G., aged 12; and Richard W., aged 11, all of
whom attend Monterey Park schools.
Among
Mr. Dingley’s hobbies are a variety of outdoor sports
and stamp collecting. The Dingley’s reside at 809 South Ynez Avenue in Monterey Park.
