CHARLES HAYES DIGGS
Charles Hayes Diggs has been
director of the Los Angeles County Regional Planning Commission in the Hall of
Records in Los Angeles since 1927. He
was born at Nora, Illinois, on the 13th of June, 1888, completed a
high school course in 1907 and the following years was a teacher in the Gilbert
school. Thereafter he attended Grinnell
College from 1909 until 1911. He was
identified with the D. Hill Nursery Company of Dundee, Illinois, in 1910, was a
guide in Yellowstone National Park during 1911 and was connected with the
Minneapolis Park Department in 1912.
During the period between 1911 and 1913 he attended the University of
Illinois, being a student under Charles Mulford
Robinson, the first nationally known adviser in city planning. Mr. Diggs served as landscape architect for
the parks of Washington, D. C., from 1914 until 1917 and subsequently held
special commissions in the national capital for a period of six years. He was next landscape architect for the state
of Iowa from 1923 until 1925, while during the years 1926 and1927 he was in
charge of the Pacific Coast office of Harland Bartholomew and Associates, city
plan and landscape engineers of Los Angeles, California. For the past six years, as above noted, he
has done splendid work as director of the Los Angeles County Regional Planning
Commission.
Mr. Diggs is a member of the
American City Planning Institute, a national professional organization of two
hundred fifty men and also a member of the American Society of Landscape
Architects, a national professional organization of one hundred fifty men. He is a special lecturer at the University of
Southern California, is chairman of the executive committee of the Institute of
Government and a member of the Governmental Administrative Group. His religious faith is indicated by his
membership in the Congregational Church, and he is likewise a member of the Pi
Kappa Alpha fraternity.
